The man who wishes to lead the crooked onto the road of the good with good sayings that drip nectar is bracing himself to hold back a rutting elephant with the fibres of a tender lotus stalk. He is girding himself to cut a diamond with the tip of a shirisha blossom. He is labouring to make the salt ocean sweet with a single drop of honey.
About this subhashita
Vyala means both a rutting elephant and a snake. Mrinala is the lotus stalk, and the added bala makes the fibre younger and weaker still. One word widens the gap further.
All three images set the softest thing against the hardest. Fibre and elephant, flower tip and diamond, one drop and the ocean. Sweet speech and a crooked mind are the fourth pair in the same series.
This same verse is also found in Bhartrihari’s Niti Shataka, where it stands among the verses on bad men.

For life today
Judging in advance who can be brought round and who cannot is a skill in itself. When the judgement is wrong, both our time and our peace of mind wear thin.
But it is easy to pin the verse’s verdict on anyone at all. Whether the person is crooked or simply not in a state to listen just now is a difference we have to see for ourselves.
