ಕರ್ಪೂರದ ಆರತಿ ಉರಿದು ಮುಗಿದಾಗ ಬೂದಿಯೂ ಉಳಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದೇ ಕರ್ಪೂರದ ಬಿಳುಪಿನಂತೆ ಶುಭ್ರನಾದ ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ನೆನೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.
ಗಣೇಶೋತ್ಸವದ ಆರತಿಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಶಿವ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಆರತಿಯ ನಂತರವೂ ಕೇಳಿಬರುವ ಪರಿಚಿತ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಇದು. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಶಿವ ಭವಾನಿಯೊಡನೆ ಹೃದಯಕಮಲದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿರುವ ಸೌಮ್ಯ ಕರುಣಾಮೂರ್ತಿ.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಕರ್ಪೂರಗೌರಂ ಕರುಣಾವತಾರಂ
ಸಂಸಾರಸಾರಂ ಭುಜಗೇಂದ್ರಹಾರಮ್ ।
ಸದಾ ವಸಂತಂ ಹೃದಯಾರವಿಂದೇ
ಭವಂ ಭವಾನೀಸಹಿತಂ ನಮಾಮಿ ॥

कर्पूरगौरं करुणावतारं
संसारसारं भुजगेन्द्रहारम् ।
सदा वसन्तं हृदयारविन्दे

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಕರ್ಪೂರಗೌರಮ್ (कर्पूरगौरम्, karpūragauram) = ಕರ್ಪೂರದಂತೆ ಬೆಳ್ಳಗಿರುವವನನ್ನು (white as camphor)
- ಕರುಣಾವತಾರಮ್ (करुणावतारम्, karuṇāvatāram) = ಕರುಣೆಯೇ ಮೈವೆತ್ತು ಬಂದವನನ್ನು (compassion incarnate)
- ಸಂಸಾರಸಾರಮ್ (संसारसारम्, saṃsārasāram) = ಸಂಸಾರದ ಸಾರವಾದವನನ್ನು (the essence of worldly existence)
- ಭುಜಗೇಂದ್ರಹಾರಮ್ (भुजगेन्द्रहारम्, bhujagendrahāram) = ಸರ್ಪರಾಜನನ್ನು ಹಾರವಾಗಿ ಧರಿಸಿದವನನ್ನು (wearing the king of serpents as a garland)
- ಸದಾ (सदा, sadā) = ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ (always)
- ವಸಂತಮ್ (वसन्तम्, vasantam) = ನೆಲೆಸಿರುವವನನ್ನು (dwelling)
- ಹೃದಯಾರವಿಂದೇ (हृदयारविन्दे, hṛdayāravinde) = ಹೃದಯಕಮಲದಲ್ಲಿ (in the lotus of the heart)
- ಭವಮ್ (भवम्, bhavam) = ಭವನನ್ನು, ಶಿವನನ್ನು (Bhava, Shiva)
- ಭವಾನೀಸಹಿತಮ್ (भवानीसहितम्, bhavānīsahitam) = ಭವಾನಿಯೊಡನೆ ಕೂಡಿರುವವನನ್ನು (together with Bhavani)
- ನಮಾಮಿ (नमामि, namāmi) = ನಮಸ್ಕರಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ (I bow to)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಕರ್ಪೂರದಂತೆ ಬೆಳ್ಳಗಿರುವ, ಕರುಣೆಯೇ ಮೈವೆತ್ತ, ಸಂಸಾರದ ಸಾರವಾದ, ಸರ್ಪರಾಜನನ್ನು ಹಾರವಾಗಿ ಧರಿಸಿದ, ಹೃದಯಕಮಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಸದಾ ನೆಲೆಸಿರುವ, ಭವಾನಿಯೊಡನೆ ಕೂಡಿರುವ ಭವನಿಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕರಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
I bow to Bhava together with Bhavani: white as camphor, compassion incarnate, the essence of worldly existence, garlanded with the king of serpents, forever dwelling in the lotus of the heart.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this verse
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಯಜುರ್ವೇದದ ಮಂತ್ರವೆಂದು ಹೇಳುವುದನ್ನು ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಕೇಳುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಇದು ವೇದಮಂತ್ರವಲ್ಲ, ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರೀಯ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದ ಉಪಜಾತಿ ಛಂದಸ್ಸಿನ ಸ್ತುತಿ. ಇದರ ಮೂಲ ಗ್ರಂಥ ಯಾವುದೆಂದು ಖಚಿತವಿಲ್ಲ.
One sometimes hears this verse called a mantra of the Yajurveda. It is not a Vedic mantra but a hymn in the classical upajati metre, and its source text is not certain.
ಸಂಸಾರಸಾರಂ ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ. ಶಿವ ಸಂಸಾರದಿಂದ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಕೊಡುವವನು ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ, ಸಂಸಾರದ ಸಾರವೂ ಹೌದು ಎಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಭವ ಮತ್ತು ಭವಾನಿ ಎಂಬ ಜೋಡಿ ಹೆಸರುಗಳೂ ಅದೇ ದಂಪತಿ ಭಾವವನ್ನು ತೋರುತ್ತವೆ.
The word samsarasaram is striking. Shiva is not only the one who frees us from worldly life but also its essence, the verse says. The paired names Bhava and Bhavani show the same sense of a divine couple at home in the world.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಶಿವ ಸ್ಮಶಾನದಲ್ಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಭವಾನಿಯೊಡನೆ ಹೃದಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಸಂಸಾರದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದುಕೊಂಡೇ ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಬದುಕು ನಡೆಸಬಹುದು ಎಂಬ ಭರವಸೆ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿದೆ.
The Shiva of this verse is not in the cremation ground but in the heart, with Bhavani. It carries the assurance that one can be spiritual while living in the world.
ಆರತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉರಿಯುವ ಕರ್ಪೂರ ಏನನ್ನೂ ಉಳಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆ ಉರಿಯನ್ನು ನೋಡುವ ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಒಂದು ಹಳೆಯ ಅಸಮಾಧಾನವನ್ನೂ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಟ್ಟುಬಿಡಬಹುದು.
Burning camphor in the aarati leaves nothing behind. In the moment of watching that flame, one old grievance in the mind can be burned away with it.
