ಹಂಸ ಹಾಲು ಮತ್ತು ನೀರು ಬೆರೆತಿದ್ದರೆ ಹಾಲನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಕುಡಿಯುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಪುರಾಣದ ನಂಬಿಕೆ.
ಆ ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಕೇಳುವ ಕಲೆಗೆ ಅನ್ವಯಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದೂ ಕೆಟ್ಟದೂ ಬೆರೆತ ಮಾತಿನಿಂದ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು.
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞೋ ಹಿ ಜಲ್ಪತಾಂ ಪುಂಸಾಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ವಾಚಃ ಶುಭಾಶುಭಾಃ ।
ಗುಣವದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಮಾದತ್ತೇ ಹಂಸಃ ಕ್ಷೀರಮಿವಾಮ್ಭಸಃ ॥

प्राज्ञो हि जल्पतां पुंसां श्रुत्वा वाचः शुभाशुभाः ।
गुणवद्वाक्यमादत्ते हंसः क्षीरमिवाम्भसः ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞಃ ಹಿ (प्राज्ञः हि, prājñaḥ hi) = ಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞನು ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿ (the wise man indeed)
- ಜಲ್ಪತಾಮ್ ಪುಂಸಾಮ್ (जल्पताम् पुंसाम्, jalpatām puṃsām) = ಮಾತನಾಡುವ ಜನರ (of people who talk)
- ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ವಾಚಃ (श्रुत्वा वाचः, śrutvā vācaḥ) = ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿ (having heard the words)
- ಶುಭಾಶುಭಾಃ (शुभाशुभाः, śubhāśubhāḥ) = ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವೂ ಕೆಟ್ಟವೂ ಆದ (good and bad alike)
- ಗುಣವದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ (गुणवद्वाक्यम्, guṇavadvākyam) = ಗುಣವುಳ್ಳ ಮಾತನ್ನು (the word that has worth)
- ಆದತ್ತೇ (आदत्ते, ādatte) = ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ (takes up)
- ಹಂಸಃ ಕ್ಷೀರಮ್ ಇವ ಅಮ್ಭಸಃ (हंसः क्षीरम् इव अम्भसः, haṃsaḥ kṣīram iva ambhasaḥ) = ಹಂಸ ನೀರಿನಿಂದ ಹಾಲನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತೆ (as a swan takes the milk from the water)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಮಾತನಾಡುವ ಜನರ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮತ್ತು ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿ, ಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞನು ಗುಣವುಳ್ಳ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಹಂಸ ನೀರಿನೊಡನೆ ಬೆರೆತ ಹಾಲನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Having heard the words of those who talk, good and bad alike, the wise man takes up only what has worth in them, as a swan takes the milk from water it is mixed with.
ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita
ಹಂಸಕ್ಷೀರನ್ಯಾಯ ಎಂಬುದು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ನ್ಯಾಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು. ನ್ಯಾಯ ಎಂದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ದೃಷ್ಟಾಂತ, ಅಂದರೆ ವಾದಕ್ಕೆ ಬಳಸುವ ಸಿದ್ಧ ಚಿತ್ರ.
The hamsa-kshira-nyaya is one of the well known nyayas of Sanskrit. A nyaya here means a ready illustration used in argument.
ಈ ಭಾಗದ ಮುಂದೆ ಬರುವ ಕುಪಂಡಿತನಿಂದಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೇ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಜೋಡಿ ಇದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರ್ಖನು ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಮಾತನ್ನೇ ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಎರಡನ್ನೂ ಜೊತೆಯಾಗಿ ಓದಿದರೆ ಚಂದ.
In the section against the falsely learned there is a matching verse in which the fool picks out only what is bad. The two are best read together.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಸಭೆಯ ನಂತರ, ಎಲ್ಲರ ಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲೂ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದೂ ಕೆಟ್ಟದೂ ಬೆರೆತಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಯಾವುದನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದು ನಮ್ಮ ಆಯ್ಕೆ.
In a meeting and after it, everyone’s words carry both good and bad. Which of them we keep in memory is our own choice.
ಟೀಕೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಒಂದು ಉಪಯೋಗದ ಅಂಶ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಉಳಿದದ್ದನ್ನು ಬಿಡುವುದು ಕಲಿಯಬೇಕಾದ ಕೌಶಲ.
Even in criticism there is usually one useful part. Taking that and leaving the rest is a skill worth learning.
