ಚಿನ್ನಕ್ಕೆ ಎರಡು ಉಪಯೋಗ. ಹಬ್ಬದಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ಆಭರಣ, ಕಷ್ಟ ಬಂದಾಗ ಅದು ಕೈ ಹಿಡಿಯುವ ಹಣ.
ಸುಭಾಷಿತಕ್ಕೂ ಇದೇ ಎರಡು ಉಪಯೋಗಗಳಿವೆ ಎಂದು ಈ ಆರ್ಯಾ ಪದ್ಯ ಶ್ಲೇಷದ ಚಮತ್ಕಾರದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಸಂಸದಿ ತದೇವ ಭೂಷಣಮುಪಕಾರಕಮವಸರೇ ಧನಂ ಮುಖ್ಯಮ್ ।
ಸೂಕ್ತಂ ದಧತಿ ಸುವರ್ಣಂ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಮನರ್ಘಮಿಹ ಧನ್ಯಾಃ ॥
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
संसदि तदेव भूषणमुपकारकमवसरे धनं मुख्यम् ।
सूक्तं दधति सुवर्णं कल्याणमनर्घमिह धन्याः ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಸಂಸದಿ (संसदि, saṃsadi) = ಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ (in an assembly)
- ತತ್ ಏವ (तत् एव, tat eva) = ಅದೇ (that alone)
- ಭೂಷಣಮ್ (भूषणम्, bhūṣaṇam) = ಆಭರಣ (the ornament)
- ಉಪಕಾರಕಮ್ (उपकारकम्, upakārakam) = ಉಪಕಾರ ಮಾಡುವ (helpful)
- ಅವಸರೇ (अवसरे, avasare) = ಸಮಯ ಬಂದಾಗ (when the moment comes)
- ಧನಮ್ (धनम्, dhanam) = ಸಂಪತ್ತು (wealth)
- ಮುಖ್ಯಮ್ (मुख्यम्, mukhyam) = ಮುಖ್ಯವಾದ (chief)
- ಸೂಕ್ತಮ್ (सूक्तम्, sūktam) = ಸುಭಾಷಿತವನ್ನು (the fine saying)
- ದಧತಿ (दधति, dadhati) = ಧರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ (wear)
- ಸುವರ್ಣಮ್ (सुवर्णम्, suvarṇam) = ಚಿನ್ನ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಅರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳುಳ್ಳದ್ದು (gold; well lettered)
- ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಮ್ (कल्याणम्, kalyāṇam) = ಮಂಗಳಕರವಾದ (auspicious)
- ಅನರ್ಘಮ್ (अनर्घम्, anargham) = ಬೆಲೆ ಕಟ್ಟಲಾಗದ (priceless)
- ಇಹ (इह, iha) = ಈ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ (here in this world)
- ಧನ್ಯಾಃ (धन्याः, dhanyāḥ) = ಪುಣ್ಯವಂತರು (the fortunate)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅದೇ ಆಭರಣ. ಸಮಯ ಬಂದಾಗ ಅದೇ ಉಪಕಾರ ಮಾಡುವ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಸಂಪತ್ತು. ಮಂಗಳಕರವೂ ಬೆಲೆ ಕಟ್ಟಲಾಗದ್ದೂ ಆದ ಸುಭಾಷಿತವೆಂಬ ಚಿನ್ನವನ್ನು ಈ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಪುಣ್ಯವಂತರು ಧರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
In an assembly it is the ornament. When the moment comes it is the chief wealth that helps. The fortunate in this world wear the fine saying as gold, auspicious and beyond price.
ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita
ಸುವರ್ಣ ಎಂಬ ಪದದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ಲೇಷವಿದೆ. ಸುಭಾಷಿತರತ್ನಭಾಂಡಾಗಾರದ ಅಡಿಟಿಪ್ಪಣಿ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾಂಚನ, ಅಂದರೆ ಚಿನ್ನ, ಮತ್ತು ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಪಕ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ್ದು ಎಂಬ ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ವರ್ಣ ಎಂದರೆ ಬಣ್ಣವೂ ಹೌದು, ಅಕ್ಷರವೂ ಹೌದು.
The word suvarna carries a pun. The footnote in the Subhashitaratnabhandagara gives it two senses: kanchana, gold, and, on the side of the saying, made of good letters. Varna means both colour and letter.
ಆರ್ಯಾ ಪದ್ಯವನ್ನು ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯಿಂದಲ್ಲ, ಮಾತ್ರೆಗಳ ಲೆಕ್ಕದಿಂದ ಕಟ್ಟುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ಪದ್ಯದ ಮೊದಲರ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂವತ್ತು, ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅರ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತೇಳು ಮಾತ್ರೆಗಳಿವೆ.
An arya verse is built by counting morae, not syllables. This verse has thirty morae in its first half and twenty-seven in the second.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಮದುವೆ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುವ ಶುಭಾಶಯವೂ, ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುವ ಸಾಂತ್ವನವೂ ಮಾತಿನ ಈ ಎರಡು ಉಪಯೋಗಗಳಿಗೆ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ. ಒಂದು ಸಂದರ್ಭವನ್ನು ಅಲಂಕರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಕಷ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಸರೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
A blessing spoken at a wedding and comfort offered in a hospital are examples of these two uses of words. One adorns an occasion, the other supports someone in trouble.
ಚಿನ್ನವನ್ನು ಕಳ್ಳರು ಕದಿಯಬಹುದು. ನೆನಪಿನಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಯಾರೂ ಕದಿಯಲಾರರು.
Thieves can steal gold. Nobody can steal a good saying kept in memory.
