ಅರ್ಥ ಎಂಬ ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಥ. ಒಂದು ಮಾತಿನ ಅರ್ಥ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಹಣ.
ಅವ್ಯಯ ಎಂಬ ಪದಕ್ಕೂ ಎರಡು. ವ್ಯಾಕರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ರೂಪ ಬದಲಾಗದ ಪದ, ವ್ಯವಹಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ಖರ್ಚಿಲ್ಲದ್ದು. ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ಎರಡರ ಮೇಲೆ ಆಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಅರ್ಥಾಹರಣಕೌಶಲ್ಯಂ ಕಿಂ ಸ್ತುಮಃ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರವಾದಿನಾಮ್ ।
ಅವ್ಯಯೇಭ್ಯೋಽಪಿ ಯೇ ಚಾರ್ಥಾನ್ನಿಷ್ಕರ್ಷನ್ತಿ ಸಹಸ್ರಶಃ ॥
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
अर्थाहरणकौशल्यं किं स्तुमः शास्त्रवादिनाम् ।
अव्ययेभ्योऽपि ये चार्थान्निष्कर्षन्ति सहस्रशः ॥
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)
arthāharaṇakauśalyaṃ kiṃ stumaḥ śāstravādinām |
avyayebhyo’pi ye cārthānniṣkarṣanti sahasraśaḥ ||
ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಅರ್ಥಾಹರಣಕೌಶಲ್ಯಮ್ (अर्थाहरणकौशल्यम्, arthāharaṇakauśalyam) = ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನು ತೆಗೆಯುವ ಕೌಶಲವನ್ನು (the skill of drawing out meaning, and of drawing out money)
- ಕಿಮ್ ಸ್ತುಮಃ (किम् स्तुमः, kim stumaḥ) = ಏನೆಂದು ಹೊಗಳೋಣ (how shall we praise)
- ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರವಾದಿನಾಮ್ (शास्त्रवादिनाम्, śāstravādinām) = ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಹೇಳುವವರ (of those who expound the sciences)
- ಅವ್ಯಯೇಭ್ಯಃ ಅಪಿ (अव्ययेभ्यः अपि, avyayebhyaḥ api) = ಅವ್ಯಯಗಳಿಂದಲೂ, ಖರ್ಚಿಲ್ಲದವರಿಂದಲೂ (even from indeclinables, and even from the thrifty)
- ಯೇ ಚ ಅರ್ಥಾನ್ (ये च अर्थान्, ye ca arthān) = ಯಾರು ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು (who, meanings)
- ನಿಷ್ಕರ್ಷನ್ತಿ (निष्कर्षन्ति, niṣkarṣanti) = ಎಳೆದು ತೆಗೆಯುತ್ತಾರೋ (draw out)
- ಸಹಸ್ರಶಃ (सहस्रशः, sahasraśaḥ) = ಸಾವಿರಗಟ್ಟಲೆ (by the thousand)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಹೇಳುವವರ ಅರ್ಥ ತೆಗೆಯುವ ಕೌಶಲವನ್ನು ಏನೆಂದು ಹೊಗಳೋಣ? ಅವ್ಯಯಗಳಿಂದಲೂ ಅವರು ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಎಳೆದು ತೆಗೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
How shall we praise the skill of the expounders of the sciences in drawing out meaning? Even out of indeclinables they draw meanings by the thousand.

ಮುದ್ರಿತ ಪ್ರತಿಯ ಅಡಿಟಿಪ್ಪಣಿಯೇ ಈ ಶ್ಲೇಷೆಯನ್ನು ಬಿಡಿಸಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವ್ಯಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಹಲವು ಅರ್ಥ ಇರುವುದರಿಂದ, ಪಕ್ಷೇ ವ್ಯಯವಿಲ್ಲದವರಿಂದ, ಅಂದರೆ ಜಿಪುಣರಿಂದ ಎಂದು ಅದು ಬರೆದಿದೆ.
The footnote in the printed edition unpacks the pun: because indeclinables have many meanings, and on the other side, from those without expenditure, that is, from the thrifty.
ಆಹರಣ ಮತ್ತು ನಿಷ್ಕರ್ಷಣ ಎಂಬ ಎರಡೂ ಪದಗಳು ಎಳೆದು ತೆಗೆಯುವುದನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಹೊಗಳಿಕೆಯಂತೆ ಕಾಣುವ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಒಳಗೆ ಸಣ್ಣ ವ್ಯಂಗ್ಯವನ್ನೂ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡಿದೆ.
Both aharana and nishkarshana suggest pulling something out. The verse looks like praise but keeps a small irony inside it.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನೂ ಎಳೆದು ತರುವುದನ್ನು ನಾವು ದಿನವೂ ಕಾಣುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಯಾವ ವಾಕ್ಯದಿಂದಲೂ ಬೇಕಾದ ಅರ್ಥ ತೆಗೆಯಬಹುದು ಎಂಬುದೇ ಅಪಾಯ.
We see every day how a meaning that was never there can be pulled out of a sentence. The danger is exactly that any sentence can be made to yield what one wants.
ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಿಸುವಾಗ ಅವರ ಪೂರ್ಣ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ಇಡುವುದು ಸರಿಯಾದ ದಾರಿ.
So the honest way, when quoting what someone said, is to keep their whole sentence.
