ವಿದುಷಾಂ ವದನಾದ್ವಾಚಃ: ಆನೆಯ ದಂತದಂತೆ ಹಿಂದಿರುಗದ ಮಾತು

ಆನೆಯ ದಂತ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಹೊರಬಂದರೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಒಳಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ತಿಳಿದವನ ಮಾತೂ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಎಂದು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದು ಬೇಗ ಹೊರಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಬಂದ ಮೇಲೆ ಹಿಂದಿರುಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ವಿದುಷಾಂ ವದನಾದ್ವಾಚಃ ಸಹಸಾ ಯಾನ್ತಿ ನೋ ಬಹಿಃ ।
ಯಾತಾಶ್ಚೇನ್ನ ಪರಾಞ್ಚನ್ತಿ ದ್ವಿರದಾನಾಂ ರದಾ ಇವ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

विदुषां वदनाद्वाचः सहसा यान्ति नो बहिः ।
याताश्चेन्न पराञ्चन्ति द्विरदानां रदा इव ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

viduṣāṃ vadanādvācaḥ sahasā yānti no bahiḥ |
yātāścenna parāñcanti dviradānāṃ radā iva ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ವಿದುಷಾಮ್ (विदुषाम्, viduṣām) = ತಿಳಿದವರ (of the wise)
ವದನಾತ್ (वदनात्, vadanāt) = ಬಾಯಿಯಿಂದ (from the mouth)
ವಾಚಃ (वाचः, vācaḥ) = ಮಾತುಗಳು (words)
ಸಹಸಾ (सहसा, sahasā) = ಧಿಡೀರನೆ (suddenly)
ಯಾನ್ತಿ ನೋ ಬಹಿಃ (यान्ति नो बहिः, yānti no bahiḥ) = ಹೊರಗೆ ಹೋಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (do not come out)
ಯಾತಾಃ ಚೇತ್ (याताः चेत्, yātāḥ cet) = ಹೊರಬಂದರೆ (and if they have come out)
ನ ಪರಾಞ್ಚನ್ತಿ (न पराञ्चन्ति, na parāñcanti) = ಹಿಂದಿರುಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (they do not turn back)
ದ್ವಿರದಾನಾಮ್ (द्विरदानाम्, dviradānām) = ಆನೆಗಳ (of elephants)
ರದಾಃ ಇವ (रदाः इव, radāḥ iva) = ದಂತಗಳಂತೆ (like the tusks)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ತಿಳಿದವರ ಬಾಯಿಯಿಂದ ಮಾತು ಧಿಡೀರನೆ ಹೊರಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಹೊರಬಂದ ಮೇಲೆ ಅದು ಹಿಂದಿರುಗುವುದೂ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಆನೆಗಳ ದಂತಗಳಂತೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Words do not come rushing out of the mouths of the wise; and once they have come out, they do not turn back, like the tusks of elephants.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ದ್ವಿರದ ಎಂದರೆ ಎರಡು ದಂತವುಳ್ಳದ್ದು, ಅಂದರೆ ಆನೆ. ರದ ಎಂದರೆ ದಂತ. ಒಂದೇ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿದ್ದು ಕವಿಯ ಚಮತ್ಕಾರ.

Dvirada means the two tusked one, that is, the elephant; rada means a tusk. Using both words in one line is the poet’s stroke.

ಶ್ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡು ಮಾತುಗಳಿವೆ, ಎರಡೂ ಮುಖ್ಯ. ಬೇಗ ಮಾತನಾಡದಿರುವುದು ಒಂದು ಗುಣ, ಆಡಿದ ಮಾತಿಗೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುವುದು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು.

The verse makes two points and both matter: not speaking in haste, and standing by what has been said.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಸಂದೇಶ ಕಳುಹಿಸುವ ಮೊದಲು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಓದಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಇಂದಿನ ರೂಪ. ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಹಿಂತೆಗೆಯುವುದು ಕಷ್ಟ.

Reading a message once before sending it is this verse in its modern form. After it is sent, taking it back is hard.

ಸಿಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದದ್ದನ್ನು ಮಾರನೆಯ ದಿನ ನೋಡಿ ಕಳುಹಿಸುವ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಬಹಳ ತೊಂದರೆಯನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

The habit of looking again the next morning at what was written in anger saves a great deal of trouble.
