Context and commentary on verse 2.70
This is the finest of the Gita’s images. The sea does not hold back the rivers, and it does not swell because they have come.
Madhvacharya catches the picture in three verbs, and they are exact: he does not swell, he does not strive, and he does not dry up in their absence. The sea does not grow because a river has entered, nor shrink because one has not.
Shankaracharya’s stress falls elsewhere: the desires enter him and dissolve in him, and do not take him into their service. Ramanujacharya adds a fine point: whether the objects come within reach or not, the contentment of seeing the self keeps him unchanged.

We praise contentment in poverty. Contentment in plenty is harder, and it is what this verse is about.
The sea does not refuse the rivers. Let everything come, but let it not decide my level: that is the feeling here.
