Context and commentary on verse 2.69

This is one of the most beautiful verses in the Gita, and the three acharyas see three different nights in it.

For Shankaracharya the night is the highest truth. It is night to the unknowing because it lies beyond their sight, and he gives the comparison of owls, for whom the day itself is night. On this verse he builds one of his large positions: for the knower there is no claim upon action, only upon the standing in knowledge.

Ramanujacharya reads it plainly as a statement about two kinds of awareness: the awareness of the self gives no light to ordinary beings, as night gives none, and the awareness of sound and the other objects is night to the sage. For Madhvacharya the night is the very nature of the Lord, and in it the knower sees the Supreme directly.

Reading this verse as advice to stay awake at night is a common mistake. The night here is not the night of the clock. Sleep is necessary for health, and in the sixth chapter the Gita plainly rejects both too much waking and too much sleep.

For life today

Two people sitting in the same room may be awake to different things. One sees the prices, the other sees the faces.

What we are awake to decides the life we have. Where the attention goes, the life goes.
