Context and commentary on verse 4.21
The meaning of three words, ‘shariram kevalam karma’, is the centre of the discussion here. Does it mean ‘action done by the body’, or ‘action done only to keep the body going’?
Shankara discusses this at length and chooses the second. If it meant ‘action done by the body’, the verse would absurdly say that even forbidden acts done with the body bring no sin. So the sense is action needed only for the body’s upkeep, and even that without any sense of ‘mine’. In his reading this describes the renunciate. He adds that for a seeker of liberation even merit is ‘kilbisha’, a fault, because it too binds.
Ramanuja reads it as a description of the karma yogi. One who, without seeking fruit, with the self as the only goal, and without any sense of ‘mine’ towards prakriti and its products, does only bodily action throughout life, does not incur samsara. By karma yoga alone, he says, without the intervening stage of devotion to knowledge, such a person sees the self.
Madhva reads it as the method for giving up desire and the rest: first restrain the mind, and then become free of expectation. Giving up possessions means not throwing things away but giving up the sense of ownership in them. The ‘does nothing at all’ of the previous verse, he says, is explained here as ‘incurs no fault’.

For life today
‘Parigraha’ means grasping from all sides. Madhva’s reading is close to us: what has to go is not things but the grip of ‘this is mine’.
Eating, sleeping and caring for the body are actions too, and the Gita does not look down on them. Looking after the body properly is the foundation of any practice. Doing it without clutching and without pride is the subtle point here.
