Context and commentary on verse 4.26
Two practices running in opposite directions sit in one verse. In one, the senses are the oblation; in the other, the senses are the fire.
Sridhara Swami names who these are. The first are lifelong celibate students, who hold the senses back and stand in restraint. The second are householders: even while enjoying, without attachment, they regard the senses as fire and the objects as oblation.
Shankara notes the plural ‘fires of restraint’: the restraint differs for each sense. Those of the second kind regard the very taking in of unforbidden objects through the senses as an offering.
Ramanuja’s reading is simple and practical: some strive to restrain the senses; others strive to check the senses’ inclination to slide towards their objects. In the text available to us, Madhva has no separate comment on this verse.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
Sridhara Swami’s reading offers householders a reassurance. Living with eyes and ears shut is not the only road. Seeing something beautiful, hearing music, eating: done without clinging and with gratitude, these too become sacrifice.
But what both roads share is control. The senses dragging us along is one thing; our receiving the world through them is another.
