Context and commentary on verse 4.30
Sridhara Swami counts the list of twelve sacrifices as ending here. The acharyas unpack ‘offering the life-breaths into the life-breaths’ in different ways.
For Shankara, it means dissolving the other airs into whichever air one has mastered. Madhva’s explanation is more direct: by measured eating alone the pranas are subdued. He quotes: ‘For one who eats little, the pranas are as if offered into the pranas.’
Sridhara Swami quotes a well known rule from the yoga texts: fill two parts of the stomach with food, one part with water, and leave the fourth empty for the movement of air. As another meaning, he offers contemplation of the ajapa mantra ‘hamsah soham’.
Ramanuja ties ‘knowers of sacrifice’ to the third chapter. All these kinds of karma yogis know the daily and occasional duties founded on the great sacrifices spoken of in 3.10, are devoted to them, and for that very reason are cleansed of sin.

For life today
The old rule of leaving a quarter of the stomach empty is close to today’s common advice on eating in moderation. Everyone knows how dull the mind turns after eating until the stomach is bursting.
But this is a traditional rule, not a medical prescription. People on diabetes medicines or insulin, growing children, pregnant women and the elderly can put themselves at risk by cutting down meals without asking their doctor. Moderation does not mean going hungry.
