Arjuna said: Your birth is recent, and the birth of Vivasvan long ago. How am I to understand that you taught it to him in the beginning?
Context and commentary on verse 4.4
Arjuna’s question is one of simple logic. Krishna was born recently in the house of Vasudeva; the Sun has existed since the beginning of creation. How then could Krishna have taught it first?
Shankara identifies the purpose of the question. Arjuna raises it as if it were an objection, so that no one should think the Lord had said something self-contradictory. The answer that follows removes the doubt of the ignorant that Vasudeva is not the Lord and not all-knowing.
Ramanuja writes at length here. Arjuna knows that Krishna is the Lord of all. He will say so himself in the tenth chapter, and he has heard it from Bhishma at the Rajasuya. So one who knows is asking as if he did not.
What, then, is the real question? For Ramanuja it concerns the nature of the avatara: is the birth of the Lord of all unreal, like a conjuror’s illusion, or real? If real, how does it happen, of what is that body made, what causes the birth, when, and for what purpose? He reads the next five verses as the answers to these questions.
Madhva ties the question to the third chapter. Arjuna asks in order to understand, from the beginning, the greatness of the one who said in 3.30, ‘surrender all actions to me.’

There is value in asking a question even when one knows the answer. Asked aloud, the answer comes out clearly, and it reaches those listening alongside.
The Gita does not smother the question in the name of faith. Krishna stops to answer a logical doubt. The questions of our children and juniors deserve the same patience.
