ಇದೊಂದು ಶಂಕರ ಭಗವತ್ಪಾದರ ಬಿರುದುಗಳನ್ನು ಸಾಲಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುವ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ನಾಮಾವಳಿ. ಐದು ಸಾಲುಗಳಿವೆ, ಪ್ರತಿ ಸಾಲಿನ ಎರಡು ಬಿರುದುಗಳ ಕೊನೆಗೂ ಶಂಕರ ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದನ್ನು ನೂರೆಂಟು ನಾಮಗಳ ಪಟ್ಟಿ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
This is a short list of epithets of Shankara Bhagavatpada, set out line by line. It has five lines, and the word Shankara closes each of the two epithets in every line. We do not call it a list of 108 names.
ಜಗದ್ಗುರು, ಭಾಷ್ಯಕಾರ, ಶಿವಾವತಾರ, ಸದ್ಗುರುಮೂರ್ತಿ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರುಗಳು ಆಚಾರ್ಯರ ಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನೂ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನೂ ಹೇಳುತ್ತವೆ. ಮುಕ್ತಿಪ್ರದ, ಭದ್ರಪ್ರದ, ಸಂಕಟವಾರಕ, ಶಿಷ್ಯಹಿತಂಕರ ಎಂಬವು ಅವರಿಂದ ಭಕ್ತರಿಗೆ ದೊರೆಯುವ ಒಳಿತನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತವೆ.
Names such as jagadguru, bhashyakara, shivavatara and sadgurumurti speak of the Acharya’s station and work. Muktipradayaka, bhadrapradayaka, sankatavaraka and shishyahitankara speak of the good that comes through him to devotees.

ಐದು ಸಾಲುಗಳಿವೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡು ಬಿರುದುಗಳು, ಎರಡರ ಕೊನೆಗೂ ಶಂಕರ ಪದವಿದೆ. ಪಾಠವನ್ನು ಮೂಲದಲ್ಲಿರುವಂತೆಯೇ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ, ಯಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ಶುದ್ಧೀಕರಣ ಮಾತ್ರ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಕೆಲವು ಬಿರುದುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಕ್ತಿ, ಮಂಗಳ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಕಟ ನಿವಾರಣೆಯ ಮಾತಿದೆ. ಇವು ಭಕ್ತಿಯ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಯ ಮಾತುಗಳು. ಆರೋಗ್ಯದ ತೊಂದರೆಗೆ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪಠಣ ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಗೆ ಬದಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
Some epithets speak of liberation, auspiciousness and the removal of distress. These are words of devotional prayer. Prayer and chanting do not replace medical treatment for a health problem.

ಮನೆಯ ಹಿರಿಯರೊಬ್ಬರನ್ನು ಅವರು ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದಾಗ ನೆನೆದರೆ, ನಾವು ಅವರ ಒಂದು ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತು ಮುಗಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ಅವರು ಅಜ್ಜ, ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರು, ಮತ್ತೊಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ದಾರಿ ತೋರಿಸಿದ ಹಿರಿಯ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತೇವೆ.
When we remember an elder of the family in his absence, we do not stop at one name for him. To one person he was grandfather, to another the teacher, to a third the older man who showed the way.
ಈ ನಾಮಾವಳಿಯೂ ಒಬ್ಬ ಗುರುವನ್ನು ಅನೇಕ ಹೆಸರುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನೆನೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಹೆಸರೂ ಅವರ ಬದುಕಿನ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಮುಖವನ್ನು ನಮಗೆ ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
