ಇದೊಂದು ಶಂಕರದೇಶಿಕರನ್ನು ಕುರಿತ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ನಾಮಾವಳಿ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡು ಬಾರಿ ಮಾಂ ಪಾಹಿ ಎಂಬ ಕರೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ, ಅಂದರೆ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡು. ಐದು ಸಾಲುಗಳಿವೆ, ಇದನ್ನು ನೂರೆಂಟು ನಾಮಗಳ ಪಟ್ಟಿ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
This is a short namavali addressed to Shankaradeshika. The call mam pahi, meaning protect me, comes twice in every line. It has five lines and we do not call it a list of 108 names.
ಬಿರುದುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವಗುರುವಿನ ಮಗ, ಆರ್ಯಾಂಬೆಯ ಮಗ ಮತ್ತು ಕಾಲಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವನು ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರುಗಳಿವೆ. ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಸಜ್ಜನರು ಪೂಜಿಸುವವನು, ಸರ್ವಜ್ಞನಾದ ಗುರು ಎಂಬ ಸ್ತುತಿಯೂ ಇದೆ.
Among the epithets are son of Shivaguru, son of Aryamba and one born at Kaladi. There is praise too of one worshipped by the good and of an all-knowing teacher.

ಐದು ಸಾಲುಗಳಿವೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡು ಬಿರುದುಗಳು, ಎರಡರ ಕೊನೆಗೂ ಮಾಂ ಪಾಹಿ ಎಂಬ ಪಲ್ಲವಿ. ಪಾಠವನ್ನು ಮೂಲದಲ್ಲಿರುವಂತೆಯೇ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ, ಯಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ಶುದ್ಧೀಕರಣ ಮಾತ್ರ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಆರ್ತಿವಿನಾಶನ ಎಂಬ ಬಿರುದು ಪೀಡೆಯ ನಾಶವನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಭಕ್ತಿಯ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ. ಆರೋಗ್ಯದ ತೊಂದರೆಗೆ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪಠಣ ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಗೆ ಬದಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
The epithet artivinashana speaks of the destruction of affliction. It is devotional prayer. Prayer and chanting do not replace medical treatment for a health problem.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಜಾತ್ರೆಯ ಜನಜಂಗುಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಮಗು ಕೈ ತಪ್ಪಿ ಹೋದರೆ, ಅದು ಹಲವು ಮಾತನ್ನಾಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ತಂದೆಯನ್ನೋ ತಾಯಿಯನ್ನೋ ಒಂದೇ ಕರೆಯಿಂದ ಕೂಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಮತ್ತೆ ಮತ್ತೆ.
When a small child slips from a hand in the crowd at a fair, it does not say many things. It calls out to father or mother with one cry, again and again.
ಮಾಂ ಪಾಹಿ ಎಂಬ ಕರೆಯೂ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಸರಳ. ನಮಗೆ ಅದು ಹೇಗೆ ಹೇಳಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಚಿಂತೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟು, ಹಿರಿಯರ ಆಸರೆಯನ್ನು ಕೇಳುವ ನೇರ ಮಾತಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ.
The call mam pahi is just as plain. To us it looks like a direct word that asks for an elder’s shelter without worrying how to put it.
