This is a hymn of asking. Instead of setting out doctrine, the devotee stands before Mother Ganga and lays down the weight of his misdeeds, his ignorance and his grief. The lines of each verse close on rhyming forms of address to the river, which gives the hymn a refrain-like swing.

One thread returns through the whole hymn: nearness to her is enough. The tenth verse says that whoever lives near her bank lives in Vaikuntha. The eleventh says that a fish in her water is better off than a highborn man far from her. In the last verse the poet signs his own name and closes the hymn.

Shankaracharya, as the colophon of our source and tradition hold

Ganga Stotra, also called Ganga Stuti, and after its opening line Devi Sureshwari Bhagavati Gange

The panjhatika, a moraic metre named in the thirteenth verse itself, a short rhythm that suits singing

ಯಾವಾಗ: ನದಿಸ್ನಾನದ ಮುನ್ನ, ಗಂಗಾ ದಸರಾ ಮತ್ತು ಗಂಗಾ ಸಪ್ತಮಿಯಂದು, ನದಿತೀರದ ಪೂಜೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿತ್ಯಪಾಠಕ್ಕೂ · Before bathing in a river, on Ganga Dussehra and Ganga Saptami, at worship on a river bank, and as a daily recitation at home

About 4 minutes

O Devi, mistress of the gods, Bhagavati Ganga, you who carry the three worlds across, whose waves never rest. Spotless one who plays in the matted hair of Shankara, may my mind come to rest at your lotus feet.
O Bhagirathi, giver of ease, Mother, the greatness of your water is famed in the Veda. How great you are I do not know. You who are made of compassion, protect me in my ignorance.
O Ganga, stream that rose from the water which washed the feet of Hari, whose waves are white as snow, as the moon, as pearls, take away the weight of my misdeeds. By your grace bring me to the far shore of the ocean of worldly life.
Whoever has drunk your spotless water has as good as taken hold of the highest state. Mother Ganga, they say that not even Yama is able to look upon one who is devoted to you.
O Jahnavi Ganga who lift up the fallen, lovely in the bends by which you flow through the great mountains you have cleft. Mother of Bhishma, daughter of the sage Jahnu, you who keep us from falling, blessed in all three worlds.
Whoever bows to you, who give fruit in this world like the wish granting creeper, does not fall into sorrow. O Ganga who play between your two banks, whose ripples quiver like the sidelong glance of a young woman who has turned her face away.
Mother, one who has bathed in your stream is not born again in a womb. O Jahnavi Ganga who keep hell away, destroyer of impurity, towering in greatness.
You whose body no impurity touches, whose waves are holy, Jahnavi whose sidelong glance is compassion itself, victory to you, victory to you. Your feet shine in the light of the jewels in Indra’s crown, giver of ease, giver of good, refuge of those who serve you.
Bhagavati, take away my illness, my grief, my burning distress, my sin and the whole heap of my wrong thinking. Essence of the three worlds, you who flow as a garland upon the earth, in this worldly life you alone are my resort.
O Alakananda, you who are the highest joy, full of compassion, to whom the distressed bow, show your compassion to me. Whoever lives near your bank lives, in truth, in Vaikuntha.
Better to be a turtle or a fish here in your water. Better a scrawny lizard on your bank. Or even a dirty and wretched outcaste close to you. All of these are better than being a highborn man of a royal house far away from you.
O mistress of the worlds, holy and blessed, goddess whose very body is flowing water, daughter of the best of sages. The man who recites this spotless praise of Ganga every day truly prevails.
Those in whose heart there is devotion to Ganga always come to happiness and release. That devotion rises through these sweet and graceful panjhatika verses, filled with the highest joy.
This hymn to Ganga, the best that worldly life holds, giver of what is wished for, spotless and pure, was composed by Shankara the servant of Shankara. Whoever recites it becomes happy. And with that the hymn is complete.

About this hymn

We take the text from stotranidhi.com. Both its colophon and the fourteenth verse name Shankaracharya as the author, and in that verse the poet plays on his own name, saying that it was composed by Shankara the servant of Shankara, that is of Shiva. Many hymns, however, circulate under Shankaracharya’s name, so this is best taken as what tradition holds.

Fourteen verses, in the metre the thirteenth verse itself names, the panjhatika, a metre counted by morae. Every line ends on a rhyming form of address to the river, which gives the hymn a refrain-like swing. Since those forms of address change from verse to verse, we have given their sense in full throughout.

The first verse is often recited on its own, and for that reason it also has a separate page on this site under the name Devi Sureshwari Bhagavati Gange. Here we give all fourteen verses together.

On the text: in the tenth verse we split kuru karunamayi as kuru karunam mayi and read it as a plea to show compassion to the devotee. The first word of the eighth verse, punarasadange, appears differently in different editions, and we give only the usual sense, that no impurity touches her body. The last two lines of the thirteenth verse are the hymn describing itself, and we read them together with the first two.

The fourth and seventh verses say that one who has drunk her water or bathed in it is not born again, and that Yama cannot even look upon him. The eleventh is blunter still: a turtle or a fish in her water is better off than a highborn man far from her. The thought there is that nearness to what is holy counts for more than birth or rank.

· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.

For life today

In the hot months a drinking water tap by the road gives the same water to everyone. It does not ask the name, the community or the standing of whoever comes to it. The same thought is in this hymn when it says that the one near the bank is more blessed than the highborn man far away.

Someone, besides, has to put that tap there, and someone has to keep it working through the summer. Keeping the water of our own town clean and within everyone’s reach is part of what it means to call a river mother.
