Somavati Amavasya

A new moon that falls on a Monday, kept with a river bath, offerings for the ancestors, Shiva puja and, by married women, worship of the peepal tree.

Somavati Amavasya is not a tithi of its own but a meeting of two things: an amavasya, the new moon that ends the lunar month, falling on a Monday, Somavara, the day of the moon. It can come in any month. Some years have none, others two or three. It is kept across North and western India, and the name is known wherever almanacs are read.

Why the weekday matters

Amavasya is already the day of the month for the ancestors, for tarpana and dana. Monday belongs to Soma, the moon, and is also kept as Shiva’s day, since Shiva wears the crescent. When the moon’s own weekday falls on the night the moon is not seen, the two observances are joined: the morning given to the departed, the day to Shiva and Parvati.

How it is kept

The chief form is the bath. Those who can go to a river, and in the North the bathing ghats of the Ganga at Haridwar and at the Triveni draw large numbers on a Somavati Amavasya. Sesame and water are offered for the departed, and many keep a fast or eat once in the day. Shiva is worshipped in the evening, at home or in a temple.

The second form belongs to married women. They worship the peepal, the ashvattha, which tradition regards as a dwelling of Vishnu: water and milk are poured at its roots, flowers, rice, kumkum and sandal are offered, a cotton thread is wound round the trunk, and the tree is circled, one hundred and eight times by those who keep the full vow. The prayer is for the husband’s long life and for the family.

In Maharashtra the day has a place of its own at Jejuri, the hill shrine of Khandoba near Pune. The Somavati Amavasya festival there runs over several days; the image of Khandoba is carried in a palanquin down to the Karha river to be bathed, and pilgrims throw turmeric over one another until the town is yellow with it.

Which day Anudina gives

Anudina keeps the monthly amavasya on the day on which the amavasya tithi is running at sunrise, and names that day Somavati Amavasya when it is a Monday. The next Somavati Amavasyas it gives are 9 November 2026, the morning after the Deepavali new moon night, and 8 March 2027. The weekday is counted by the local calendar day, so the place chosen in Anudina decides it.

Almanacs do not all use the same test, and lists of Somavati Amavasya differ more than most lists. Some name the Monday on which the amavasya merely begins, in the evening, so that one widely read list for 2026 gives 16 February and 13 July; by the sunrise rule those two amavasyas belong to the Tuesday. Equally, the sunrise rule counts a Monday such as 15 June 2026, on which the amavasya ended a few hours after sunrise. A family that has always followed its own almanac on this will be keeping a reasoned day, and the difference is one of rule, not of error.

For rites for the ancestors the moment that matters is the afternoon, not the sunrise, and the amavasya page explains how that can move a tarpana to the day before. The Monday evening observance of the trayodashi is Soma Pradosha.
