Om. O Mother, Bhagavad Gita: you were taught to Partha by the Lord Narayana himself, and woven into the middle of the Mahabharata by Vyasa, the ancient sage. Goddess of eighteen chapters, you rain down the nectar of non-duality, and you are the enemy of the round of birth and death. On you I meditate, again and again.

Explanation of verse 1

The dhyana opens by speaking to the Bhagavad Gita itself, and calls it amba, ‘mother’. The first half of the verse says who stands behind the book. Narayana, the Lord, taught it to Partha, the son of Pritha. Vyasa, the ancient sage, set it in the middle of the Mahabharata. One spoke it; the other wove it into the great story.

The second half says what the book does. It rains the nectar of advaita, ‘non-duality’. In Sri Shankara’s reading that is the knowledge that the self and the highest are not two; the other schools of Vedanta read the word otherwise. It has eighteen chapters, and the verse calls it bhagavati, ‘goddess’. And it is bhavadveshini, the enemy of bhava, the round of birth and death in which a person stays bound. A mother who stands against the very thing that keeps her child tied.

Anusandadhami is more than ‘I remember’. It means to hold something in the mind and keep returning to it. In its very first verse the dhyana says how the book is to be read: not once, but by coming back.

The dhyana begins with Om. Om, shri, svasti and shubha are counted among the auspicious words, mangala-vachaka, and many a text and letter begins with one of them. To begin with such a word is to remember what is good before anything else is said.

Salutations to you, Vyasa of vast intellect, whose eyes are long like the petals of a full-blown lotus. It was you who lit that lamp of knowledge, filled with the oil of the Mahabharata.

Explanation of verse 2

From the book the dhyana turns to the one who set it down. It praises Vyasa for a vast intellect, and gives an image of beauty as well: eyes long like the petals of a lotus in full bloom. Lotus eyes are a mark the tradition usually gives to Vishnu. It gives them to Vyasa too, whom it honours as a form of Vishnu.

Then the main picture of the verse. A lamp needs oil, and here the oil is the Mahabharata: the long story of one family, its quarrels, its war and its grief. The flame lit in that oil is knowledge. Oil alone gives no light, and a flame with no oil soon goes out. Vyasa gave both.

So the Bhagavad Gita is best read with its story. Arjuna’s question comes out of a family torn in two, and the light of the answer burns inside that story, not outside it.

Salutations to Krishna: the wish-granting tree of those who take refuge in him, who holds the driver’s whip in one hand, who shows the sign of knowledge, and who milks the nectar of the Bhagavad Gita.

Explanation of verse 3

Parijata is the tree of the heavens that grants whatever is asked of it. To one who comes to him for refuge, prapanna, Krishna is that tree. It is the word Arjuna will use of himself in the second chapter: ‘I have taken refuge in you: teach me’ (2.7).

Then two hands. One holds the charioteer’s whip. The other is held in jnana mudra, the sign of knowledge, thumb and forefinger joined, the gesture of a teacher. The one who drives the chariot is the one who teaches. The teaching is given in the middle of the work, on a chariot halted between two armies, not in a hermitage far from it.

The last name, gitamritaduh, ‘the one who milks the nectar of the Bhagavad Gita’, prepares the picture of the next verse.

All the Upanishads are the cows, and the one who milks them is Krishna, the cowherd’s son. Partha is the calf, the wise are those who drink, and the milk is the great nectar of the Bhagavad Gita.

Explanation of verse 4

This may be the best loved of the dhyana verses, and it holds a whole account of the Bhagavad Gita in one picture. The Upanishads are the cows. The milk is already in them, but a cow does not give her milk to whoever passes by. Someone has to draw it out, and here the milker is Krishna, who grew up among cowherds and knew cows.

Then the calf. Anyone who has kept a cow knows that she lets down her milk when her calf is near. Arjuna is the calf: the milk came for him, for his grief and his question. But there is more milk than one calf can drink. Sudhih bhokta: the wise are the ones who drink it. What was drawn out for Arjuna at Kurukshetra is there still for anyone who comes to it with understanding.

So the verse says three things at once. The Bhagavad Gita says nothing that is not already in the Upanishads: it is their milk, not a new herd. It is the Upanishads made ready to drink: a reader need not tend the whole herd to have the milk. And it was drawn out by a real question, asked in a real crisis.

The verse is found also in the Mahatmya of the Bhagavad Gita, the hymn in its praise that is handed down in the Vaishnaviya Tantrasara.

I bow to Krishna, the teacher of the world: the son of Vasudeva, the divine one, the destroyer of Kamsa and Chanura, the supreme joy of Devaki.

Explanation of verse 5

After the images, a plain verse of names, and the names follow his life. He is Vasudeva’s son, born, as the story goes, in Kamsa’s prison. He is the one who destroyed Kamsa, and Chanura, the wrestler Kamsa set against him in Mathura. He is the supreme joy of Devaki, a mother whose children her brother Kamsa had killed, in fear for his own life.

The last name is the one that matters here: jagadguru, ‘the teacher of the world’. The other names place him in a family and a story. This one is the reason the Bhagavad Gita is read. The child born in a prison is bowed to as the teacher of everyone who would learn.

The river of battle had Bhishma and Drona for its banks and Jayadratha for its water. Shakuni of Gandhara was its blue lotus, Shalya its crocodile, Kripa its current and Karna its crashing waves. Ashvatthama and Vikarna were its fearsome sea monsters, and Duryodhana its whirlpool. That river the Pandavas crossed, and Keshava was the ferryman.

Explanation of verse 6

Read slowly, the verse is a picture of the Kaurava army as a river in flood, with each of its great warriors given a part. Bhishma and Drona, the two elders, are the banks: they hold the river and give it its shape. Duryodhana, at its centre, is the whirlpool. The others are its water, its current, its waves and the creatures that lie in wait in it.

No one crosses such a river by strength alone. The Pandavas crossed it, the verse says, and gives the reason in its last two words: kaivartakah keshavah, ‘Keshava was the ferryman’. He did not fight in that war. He steered.

Every reader has some river of this kind to cross. The verse does not say the river is shallow. It says who steers.

The Mahabharata is a lotus: the spotless word of Vyasa, son of Parashara. The meaning of the Bhagavad Gita is its strong fragrance, its many tales are its filaments, and the stories of Hari make it bloom. In this world the good, like bees, drink from it with delight, day after day. May that lotus, which washes away the grime of the age of Kali, be for our highest good.

Explanation of verse 7

In the second verse the Mahabharata was oil for a lamp. Here it is a lotus, and the verse works the picture out part by part. Parasharya, ‘the son of Parashara’, is Vyasa, and his word is the flower. The many tales are its filaments. The stories of Hari, told again and again in it, are what open it, as a lotus opens to the sun.

And the fragrance is the meaning of the Bhagavad Gita. A fragrance reaches you before you reach the flower. Many who have never read the Mahabharata through have caught the fragrance of the Bhagavad Gita, and been drawn by it to the rest of the story.

The good come to it like bees, aharahah, ‘day after day’, and pepiyamanam, ‘drinking and drinking again’. Not once. And the prayer at the end asks one thing: that this lotus, which washes away the grime of the age of Kali, be for our highest good.

Meaning

I bow to Madhava, who is supreme bliss, whose grace makes the mute eloquent and makes the lame cross mountains.

Explanation of verse 8

After the river and the lotus, the dhyana comes down to one thing: kripa, ‘grace’. The mute becomes eloquent, the lame crosses a mountain. These are the two things a person least expects of himself, and the verse puts both down to grace.

The Bhagavad Gita itself shows it happening. In the first chapter Arjuna’s limbs give way and the Gandiva slips from his hand (1.29, 1.30). In the last he says that by Krishna’s grace his delusion is gone and his memory has come back, and that he stands firm (18.73). This verse gives a name to what happened in between.

Placed before the reading, the verse is also for the reader who feels unequal to the book: one who knows no Sanskrit, or thinks philosophy is for others. Ability is not what matters here.

Brahma, Varuna, Indra, Rudra and the Maruts praise him with divine hymns. The singers of the Sama sing of him with the Vedas, with their limbs, their pada and krama recitations and the Upanishads. Yogis see him with a mind gone into him and settled in meditation. Gods and demons alike do not know his end. To that God, salutations.

Explanation of verse 9

This verse comes from the Bhagavata Purana (12.13.1). Many editions end the dhyana here, with nine verses. Here, as in some others, one more follows.

It names three ways in which the highest is approached, and then says what none of them reaches. The gods praise him in hymns. The singers of the Sama chant him with the Vedas: with the angas, the auxiliary sciences of the Veda; in the two careful recitations that keep its text, pada, word by word, and krama, words linked in pairs; and with the Upanishads. The yogis see him in a mind that has gone into him and stayed still. Yet gods and demons alike do not know where he ends.

Notice too that the verse never names him. It says yam, ‘whom’, three times and yasya, ‘whose’, once, and only at the very end devaya tasmai namah, ‘to that God, salutations’. After praise, chant and meditation, the verse stops at what no one knows, and bows.

The singers of the Sama, samagah, have another name too: chandoga, for chandas is an old name of the Veda itself. The Chandogya Upanishad takes its name from them.

Meaning

I bow to Vishnu: peaceful in form, lying on the serpent, the lotus at his navel, the lord of the gods; the support of the universe, like the sky, the colour of a rain cloud, of auspicious limbs; beloved of Lakshmi, lotus-eyed, reached by yogis in meditation; who takes away the fear of worldly existence, the one lord of all the worlds.

Explanation of verse 10

A well-known meditation on Vishnu, said at the start of many readings and prayers, closes the dhyana here. From Krishna the teacher, the charioteer and the ferryman, it turns the reader to the same Lord at rest: as the tradition pictures him, lying on the serpent upon the waters, a lotus rising from his navel.

The names come in pairs that seem not to fit. Shantakaram, ‘peaceful in form’, and bhujagashayanam, ‘lying on a serpent’: the peace is not that of a place with no serpent in it. Gaganasadrisham, ‘like the sky’, everywhere and touched by nothing, and meghavarnam, ‘the colour of a rain cloud’, near enough to bring rain. A reader may find pairs of his own.

And the dhyana ends where it began. Its first verse called the Bhagavad Gita bhavadveshini, the enemy of the round of birth and death. Its last bows to the Lord as bhavabhayahara, the one who takes away the fear of it.

A dhyana is a verse of meditation, said before a reading or a prayer, to settle the mind and to bow before beginning. These ten are said before the Bhagavad Gita is read. They are not among its seven hundred verses.

Where they come from

Who put them together is not known. Tradition often names Madhusudana Saraswati, and some name Sridhara Swami; neither can be shown. Some modern scholars, S. Radhakrishnan among them, place the whole set in the Vaishnaviya Tantrasara. Some of the verses are found elsewhere too: the fourth in the Mahatmya of the Bhagavad Gita handed down in the Vaishnaviya Tantrasara, and the ninth in the Bhagavata Purana (12.13.1). Many editions print nine verses. Some, as here, add a tenth, the meditation on Vishnu that begins shantakaram.
