Sita Navami

Janaki Navami, the appearance of Sita, on the ninth tithi of bright Vaishakha, kept at midday one lunar month after Rama Navami, chiefly in North India.

Sita Navami marks the appearance of Sita, the daughter of King Janaka of Mithila and the wife of Rama. It falls on the ninth tithi of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha, one lunar month after Rama Navami, and is also called Sita Jayanti, Janaki Navami and Janaki Jayanti. It is kept chiefly in North India, and especially in Mithila, the country of her birth, which lies across north Bihar and the neighbouring plains of Nepal.

The story

Sita was not born in the ordinary way. As the Ramayana tells it, King Janaka was ploughing the ground in preparation for a sacrifice when he found an infant girl in the earth the plough had turned; the retellings differ on the detail, some speaking of a casket or an earthen pot. He took her as his daughter. Her name means the furrow, and her other names keep the same memory: Janaki, the daughter of Janaka; Maithili and Vaidehi, the princess of Mithila and Videha; and Bhumija, the daughter of the earth. Tradition places her appearance in the nakshatra Pushya, on a Tuesday.

Regional tradition in Bihar places the spot where she appeared at Punaura Dham in Sitamarhi district, and the town of Sitamarhi takes its name from her.

How the day is kept

The observance is simple. Married women keep a fast and pray for the long life of their husbands, Sita is worshipped together with Rama, and the Ramayana is read. The puja is done in the midday hours, as it is on Rama Navami.

Which day Anudina gives

Like Rama Navami, Sita Navami is fixed by the hour. Anudina gives it on the day on which the navami of Vaishakha shukla paksha is running at madhyahna, the third of the five parts of the daytime, the window in which Drik Panchang also prints the day’s puja muhurta. If the navami is running at midday on two days, the first is taken. If it covers the midday of neither, the day on which it is running at sunrise is taken. For 2027 Anudina gives 14 May.

The bright fortnight of Vaishakha has the same name in the amanta and purnimanta calendars, so North and South agree on the month. Sita Navami appears in Anudina under the North Indian custom, and for readers on the South Indian custom when festivals of other regions are shown.

Another date for Sita’s birth

Sita’s birth is also kept on a quite different tithi, the eighth of a dark fortnight, as Janaki Jayanti. In the North’s purnimanta reckoning that tithi is Phalguna krishna ashtami. In the amanta calendar of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat the same tithi falls in the month called Magha, and is Magha krishna ashtami. It is one day under two month names, not two days. Both the Vaishakha and the Phalguna dates are kept, by different communities, and neither displaces the other. Anudina lists the Vaishakha date.

Related days

Ganga Saptami falls two days earlier, on the seventh of the same fortnight, and Narasimha Jayanti five days later, on the fourteenth. Rama Navami, a month before, is reckoned by the same midday rule, and the Sita Rama Kalyanam that many temples perform on Rama Navami brings the two together.
