ಶಿವನಾಮಾವಲ್ಯಷ್ಟಕಂ: ಹೆಸರುಗಳ ಸಾಲು, ರಕ್ಷಣೆಯ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ

ನಾಮಾವಲಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಹೆಸರುಗಳ ಸಾಲು. ಮೊದಲ ಎಂಟು ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರು ಸಾಲುಗಳು ಶಿವನ ಹೆಸರುಗಳಿಂದ ತುಂಬಿವೆ. ನಾಲ್ಕನೆಯ ಸಾಲು ಪ್ರತಿ ಬಾರಿ ಒಂದೇ: ಸಂಸಾರದ ದುಃಖದಿಂದ ರಕ್ಷಿಸು ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ.

Namavali means a string of names. In each of the first eight verses three lines are filled with names of Shiva. The fourth line is the same every time: a prayer for rescue from the sorrow of worldly life.

ಒಂಬತ್ತನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಬೇರೆ ರೀತಿಯದು. ಅದು ಹೆಸರುಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂಬೋಧಿಸದೆ ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕರಿಸಿ ಕೊನೆಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಅಷ್ಟಕ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿದ್ದರೂ ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂಬತ್ತು ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳಿವೆ.

The ninth verse is of a different kind. It does not call out names but ends in a salutation to Shiva. So although it is called an ashtakam, it has nine verses.

ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this hymn

ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ ಶಂಕರ ಭಗವತ್ಪಾದರದ್ದು ಎಂದು ಪರಂಪರೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಶೃಂಗೇರಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಶಾರದಾ ಪೀಠದ ಜಾಲತಾಣದ ಶಿವ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರಗಳ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಇದೆ. ರಚನೆಯ ಕಾಲ ನಮಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ.

Tradition ascribes this hymn to Shankara Bhagavatpada. It is found in the Shiva section of the hymns on the website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham. We do not know its date.

ಶ್ಲೋಕ 1 ರಿಂದ 8 ರ ಕೊನೆಯ ಸಾಲು ಒಂದೇ: ಸಂಸಾರದುಃಖಗಹನಾಜ್ಜಗದೀಶ ರಕ್ಷ. ಅದನ್ನು ಶ್ಲೋಕ 1 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಅರ್ಥ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ, ಮುಂದೆ ಸಂಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತವಾಗಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಶ್ಲೋಕ 9 ಮಾತ್ರ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಗಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.

The last line of verses 1 to 8 is the same: ಸಂಸಾರದುಃಖಗಹನಾಜ್ಜಗದೀಶ ರಕ್ಷ. We translate it fully in verse 1 and briefly afterwards. Only verse 9 closes in a salutation.

ಕೆಲವು ಹೆಸರುಗಳ ಅರ್ಥ ಎರಡು ರೀತಿ ಅರ್ಥೈಸಬಹುದು. ಶ್ಲೋಕ 4 ರ ಬಾಣೇಶ್ವರಾಂಧಕರಿಪೋ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಬಾಣೇಶ್ವರನೇ ಮತ್ತು ಅಂಧಕರಿಪುವೇ ಎಂದು ನಾವು ಎರಡು ಬೇರೆ ಹೆಸರಾಗಿ ಅರ್ಥೈಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಶ್ಲೋಕ 7 ರ ವೃಷಾಕಪಿ ಎಂಬುದು ಶಿವನ ಹೆಸರೆಂದು ಅರ್ಥೈಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

A few names can be read in two ways. In verse 4 we read Baneshvara and Andhakaripu as two separate names, and in verse 7 we read Vrishakapi as a name of Shiva.

ಜನಜಂಗುಳಿಯ ನಡುವೆ ಪರಿಚಿತ ಹೆಸರೊಂದು ಕರೆದಾಗ ನಾವು ಥಟ್ಟನೆ ತಿರುಗಿ ನೋಡುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಸುತ್ತ ನೂರು ಧ್ವನಿಗಳಿದ್ದರೂ ನಮ್ಮದೇ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಕರೆ ಕೇಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಕರೆಯುವವರು ನಮ್ಮವರೆಂದು ಮನಸ್ಸು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.

In a crowd, when a familiar name is called, we turn at once. Among a hundred voices, the call of our own name is heard, and the mind knows that the caller is one of ours.

ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಕ್ತ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಒಂದರ ಹಿಂದೊಂದು ಹೆಸರು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಯಾವ ಹೆಸರಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತರ ಬರುತ್ತದೆಯೋ ಎಂದು ಕಾಯದೆ, ತನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿರುವ ಎಲ್ಲ ಹೆಸರುಗಳಿಂದ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಕೊನೆಯ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಷ್ಟೂ ಕರೆಗಳ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಒಂದೇ ಕೋರಿಕೆ ಇದೆ.

In this hymn the devotee calls in the same way, name after name. He does not wait to see which name will be answered, but calls with every name he knows. In the last line lies the one request behind all those calls.
