I worship Shiva Mahabala, of vast compassion, all-pervading, who wears the young moon as a fine ornament, husband of the mountain’s daughter, with the radiance of ten million young moons, who increases our wishes, destroys the host of sins and grants every welfare.
I bow to the supreme Shiva, worshipped by those of concentrated mind, who quelled the pride of the demons, the Lord who dries up the ocean of worldly existence, gladdens his devotees, is the fair dwelling of all things moving and unmoving, wears the crescent moon, is husband of Girija and friend of the lotus-eyed Vishnu.
I bow to Hara, free of defeat, hailed by the gods with cries of victory, the guru of the worlds, far from birth and death. He is like the sun to the lotus eyes of Parvati, the sister of Janardana. He is worshipped by the ancient Purusha and protects those who take refuge.
Bow to him who is fearsome to evildoers, who wipes out the host of sins, who dwells on the great mountain, whom the foremost sages serve, who grants a treasure of gold, who protects by compassion alone, who bears the moon on his fair head, and who gives lasting welfare.
We worship Mahabala, Shiva, who cleaves great disease, removed the pride of Madana, and destroyed the Tripura, who has fire in his eye, is worshipped by Indra, is the companion of the Himalaya’s daughter, gives every comfort, and has a form known through the Vedas. Here mahagada means great disease, which may also be read as the disease of worldly existence.
Worship the five-faced Lord who loves the flower called shilindra, wears a fine garland of shirisha flowers, is worshipped with good bilva leaves, loves lotuses and divine flowers, is praised by Brahma and Vishnu, protects the universe, and was worshipped by the ancients.
Bow to Mahabala the blue-throated, praised since long ago, who destroys the heap of sins, quickly gives me the gift of poetry, is the father of the elephant-faced one, is praised by the foremost poets, grants boons, and protects the virtuous king Krishna.
I worship the Lord with the young moon on his crest, who fulfils wishes, was worshipped by the kings of Manu’s line, bears Uma as half of his body and the divine Ganga on his head, rides the noble bull, gladdens the chief of the gods, and upholds the world.
The text says that when people hold this praise of Mahabala on their tongue every day, it gives all comfort and wealth, brings good progeny and increases the host of blessings. Devotees of the lotus feet of Shiva obtain only good on earth. The text appears to say that the praise was uttered by one named Nrikesari.
About this hymn
Mahabalesha or Mahabala is a name of Shiva. The colophon in the source links this hymn with the Chamundi hill at Mysuru and calls the place Mahishurapura. We take the great mountain of verses 4 and 8 to be that hill, though the verses do not name it.
About the author we say only what the colophon in the source says. By it, the hymn was composed by the Jagadguru Sri Vriddha Nrisimha Bharati Mahaswami. We give no date.
We give the text as it stands on the website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham. A few readings are doubtful. We take shilindra kusuma in verse 6 as a kind of flower. Krishna bhupa in verse 7 is the name of a king whom the verse does not identify. In verse 9 we take nrikesarigirerita to mean uttered in the speech of Nrikesari.
Verse 5 speaks of disease. Prayer and chanting do not replace medical treatment.
· Source: the stotra section of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham website (sringeri.net). Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
Climbing a hill in the cool of early morning, the first steps feel heavy, but once the breath finds its rhythm the climb eases. The name of the deity in this ashtaka, Mahabala, means great strength, and we may see it as the strength that stands behind the one who climbs.
When a hard task comes, we too can go one step at a time. The view from the top comes only after the steps have been taken.
