Manikarnika is the sacred ghat on the bank of the Ganga at Kashi. These nine verses speak of the glory of bathing and of dying there. The hymn returns again and again to the belief that both Vishnu and Shiva grant liberation to one who gives up life here.
The first verse tells of a contest between Hari and Hara. The verses after it weigh Kashi against heaven and find it heavier. The last verse gives the merit of the bath and the fruit of reciting the hymn.

O Manikarnika, on your bank, at the departure festival of a living being, Hari and Hara, both givers of the liberation of union, argue with each other. Hari said: let this man be of my form, and Shiva too seems to have said the same of himself. At that very moment, from the midst of him came forth a figure marked with Bhrigu’s footprint, riding Garuda, clad in yellow silk.
Indra and the other gods surely fall when their enjoyment is spent, and are then born as men, and after that as beasts, insects and moths. O mother Manikarnika, those who bathe in your water without stain become Narayanas wearing the crown and the Kaustubha jewel, even in the state of union.
Kashi is the most blessed, the city of liberation, adorned by the Ganga. In it this Manikarnika brings happiness, and liberation is her handmaid. When Brahma weighed heaven together with its gods against Kashi, Kashi, set on the surface of the earth, proved the heavier and heaven became light.
The whole bank of the Ganga is unsurpassed, and within it Kashi is the best, and within Kashi Manikarnika is the best of the best, where the Lord himself grants liberation. This place is hard to win even for the gods. It can destroy heaps of sin and shows the heap of merit earned before, and only the meritorious reach it.
Brahma, knowing how beings fallen into the ocean of sorrow might find release, made Varanasi, the giver of comfort. The worlds like heaven are light, for they end in a fall when enjoyment is over. Kashi, the city of liberation, is ever auspicious and grants dharma, artha and moksha.
The bearer of the flute, the bearer of the mountain, the wearer of the Srivatsa mark is but one, and Shankara, bearer of poison and of the Ganga, is but one, and Madhava is one. O mother Manikarnika, those who bathe in your water become Rudras or Haris, and they are many. The verse asks how that multiplicity can be.
Death on your bank is auspicious and is praised even by the gods. Indra, with his thousand eyes, is ever intent on seeing that man. The Sun with his thousand rays went forward to receive him as he came. Will that man of merit go to the abode of Shiva on the bull, or to that of Vishnu on Garuda?
Not even four-faced Brahma, the teacher who initiates into the meaning of the Vedas, could tell in his hundreds of years the merit of a midday bath at Manikarnika. Chandrashekhara, by the strength of yogic practice, has reached the far shore of that merit. On your bank he makes the man who lies down in death either Narayana or Shiva.
Whatever destruction of one’s sins comes from hundreds of crores of krcchra penances, and whatever fruit comes from horse sacrifices, all of it is contained in the merit of a bath at Manikarnika. If a man bathes and then recites this hymn, he crosses the ocean of worldly life like a puddle and goes to the radiant abode of Brahman, so the verse on the fruit declares.
About this hymn
This hymn is from the website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham. Tradition ascribes it to Shankara Bhagavatpada. We give no date of composition.
Though it is called an ashtaka, the source has nine verses. The ninth speaks of the merit of the bath and the fruit of reciting. The hymn gives the glory of Kashi and Manikarnika as the belief of the tradition. Sayujya here means the state of union with the deity.
Some parts are brief in sense. In the third line of verse one the role of the word Shivah is not clear, and we take it to mean that Shiva said the same. In the second line of verse six we take Madhava as a separate name. In verse eight we take suptapurusha to mean one who lies down in death. The closing question of verse seven we keep in its own form.

For life today
We have all known the quiet after a funeral procession has passed along the street. Talk falls away, footsteps grow soft, and for a little while the day’s hurry stops. The thought that all things pass comes to the mind then, though no one has said it.
The Manikarnikashtakam speaks mostly of liberation. Yet its very place is a place of such remembrance. That quiet is a good moment to pause and think of those who walk beside us.
