Pongal, or Thai Pongal, is the harvest thanksgiving of the Tamil country. It falls on the first day of Thai, the Tamil solar month that begins when the sun enters Makara, and so it is the same turning of the year that the rest of India keeps as Makara Sankranti, on the 14th or 15th of January. It is offered to Surya, the Sun, for the harvest, and it is the main day of a festival of three or four days, from Bhogi before it to Mattu Pongal and Kaanum Pongal after it.
The boiling over
The word pongal means boiling over, and it names both the day and its dish. On Thai 1 the new rice is boiled in a new pot, in the open and facing east, with milk and jaggery. When it rises and spills over the rim, the family shouts pongalo pongal, may it boil over. The pongal is offered to the Sun with sugarcane, turmeric plants and the vegetables of the season, and the house is decorated with kolam at the door and with banana and mango leaves.
The days around it
The festival runs over several days, and each has its work. Bhogi, the day before, clears the old things from the house, with a fire at dawn. Thai Pongal is the day of the Sun. Mattu Pongal, the day after, is for the cattle, which are washed, their horns painted, and garlanded. Jallikattu, the sport of holding on to a running bull, is held during the festival in parts of Tamil Nadu. The last day, Kaanum Pongal, is for visiting: families meet, and the young go to their elders for their blessing.
An old festival
The festival has a long record in Tamil temple history. An inscription of the Chola king Kulottunga I, who reigned from 1070 to 1122, at the Veeraraghava Swamy temple, records a grant of land to the temple for celebrating Pongal every year, and inscriptions of the Chola and Vijayanagara periods give recipes close to the pongal made today. The Tiruvempavai of Manikkavachakar, sung through Margazhi, is cited as describing the festival.
Pongal and Karnataka
Karnataka keeps the same day as Sankranti, with ellu bella, the mixture of sesame, jaggery, copra and groundnut carried from house to house, and lengths of sugarcane. The rice and green gram dish that Tamil Nadu calls pongal is the huggi of Karnataka, which has been offered before dawn through the month of Dhanurmasa that ends the day before.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina gives Pongal on Thai 1. By the Tamil rule, when the sun enters Makara before sunset that day is Thai 1, and when it enters after sunset the next day is. The two kinds of Tamil almanac can differ by a day on it. The thirukanitha almanacs follow the observed sun, as Anudina does; the vakya almanacs follow the Surya Siddhanta, and the Tamil Nadu government’s holiday list follows them. When the two part, Anudina shows both dates. In 2026 Pongal was 14 January by the observed sun and 15 January by the vakya almanacs. The next Pongal Anudina gives is 15 January 2027.
It is a Tamil observance. Anudina shows it under the South Indian custom, and under the North Indian custom only when “Show festivals of other regions too” is turned on.
