Mattu Pongal is the cattle festival of the Tamil harvest. It is kept on the second day of the Tamil solar month of Thai, the day after Pongal. Madu in Tamil means cow or cattle, and the day is given to the animals that plough the fields, draw the carts and give milk. It is the third of the four days of the Pongal festival, which opens with Bhogi on the last day of Margazhi and closes with Kanum Pongal, and it is kept chiefly in Tamil Nadu and wherever Tamil families live.

How the day is kept

The cattle are bathed in the morning, their horns are polished and painted in bright colours, and some owners cap the tips with metal. Garlands of flowers, strings of beads and small bells are tied round their necks, and turmeric and kumkum are put on their foreheads. Turmeric or saffron water is sprinkled over them with mango leaves. The family then worships them with an arati and feeds them the sweet pongal of rice, green gram and jaggery, with bananas and other fruit. Many bow before the animals in thanks for the harvest just brought in, and in the villages the decorated cattle are led in procession with music.

The day also carries a custom of the women of the house, Kanu Pidi. A turmeric leaf is placed outside the house and small balls of rice are set on it for crows and other birds, with a prayer for the well-being of brothers; brothers in turn give gifts to their married sisters. Some families do this on the morning of Mattu Pongal, others on Kanum Pongal, the day after.

In parts of Tamil Nadu the bull-taming sport of Jallikattu is held on the evening of Mattu Pongal, and in some villages on Kanum Pongal. Young men try to hold on to a running bull by its hump or horns. The sport is old, and after a challenge in the Supreme Court it is now held under safety rules set by the state.

The story told

A Tamil story explains why cattle work the fields. Shiva sent his bull Basava, Nandi, to tell people on earth to take an oil bath every day and to eat once a month. Basava confused the message and told them to bathe once a month and eat every day. Shiva cursed him for the mistake and sent him down to help people plough the fields for ever. The day of the cattle is the acknowledgement of that labour.

Other regions

The day after the sankranti belongs to the cattle in much of the South. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana it is Kanuma, also called Pasuvula Panduga, the third day of the Sankranti festival, when the cattle and their sheds are cleaned and the cows are decorated with marigolds and worshipped. Karnataka gives the cattle their share of Makara Sankranti itself: they are washed and decorated, and in villages such as those of Mandya district they are driven over a fire, the kichchu haisodu.

Which day Anudina gives

Mattu Pongal is fixed by the solar month, not by a tithi. Anudina takes the moment the sun enters Makara, which opens the Tamil month of Thai, and applies the Tamil rule for which civil day becomes the first of the month: if the sankranti falls between sunrise and sunset, that day is Thai 1; if it falls after sunset, the next day is. Thai 1 is Pongal, and Mattu Pongal is the day after it, Thai 2. The next date Anudina gives is 16 January 2027.

Two kinds of Tamil almanac can differ by a day here. The thirukanitha almanacs follow the observed sun, as Anudina does; the vakya almanacs, and with them the Tamil Nadu government’s list of holidays, follow the older Surya Siddhanta reckoning of the sankranti. In 2026 Mattu Pongal was 15 January by the first and 16 January by the second. When the two part, Anudina shows the vakya date as well. Mattu Pongal is listed among the Tamil festivals: it appears under the South setting, and elsewhere when festivals of other regions are turned on.
