Context and commentary on verse 10.40
The ‘nasty anto vistarasya me’ of verse nineteen returns here, as though framing the list. Shankara says no one can tell or know the measure of the divine glories of the Lord who is the Self of all. What has been told is only one part.
For Ramanuja the glories are ‘kalyana’, auspicious. What was told, he says, was told briefly through certain examples. Sridhara Swami calls this the conclusion of the section: since the glories are endless, it is not possible to tell them in full. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
Even after so long a list, the words ‘this is only in brief’ open our eyes. Looking for his light in what is not on the list is our task.
We can make our own list: what excellence did I see today? A nurse’s patience, a farmer’s labour, the shade of a tree. Studies suggest that the habit of writing down three things to be grateful for each day helps peace of mind.
