Context and commentary on verse 11.27
This is the harshest image in the Gita. Shankara gives ‘uttamanga’ the sense of the head, and describes what is caught between the teeth as like food that has been eaten. Sridhara Swami takes ‘tvaramanah’ to mean as if running. No one is dragging them, they are rushing in of their own accord.
Ramanuja unfolds this together with the previous verse as one sentence: all these are entering your mouths to their destruction. This scene has not yet happened, the war has not even begun. What Arjuna sees is the next page of time. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

The shastra calls the head ‘uttamanga’, the finest limb of the body. Wearing a helmet on a two-wheeler is the protection we give that finest limb.
After a blow to the head, if there is vomiting, excessive drowsiness, confusion or severe headache, go to hospital without delay. Even when no wound is seen outside, there may be bleeding inside.
