Context and commentary on verse 11.54
This is the chapter’s answer: ‘bhaktya tv ananyaya’. Shankara defines ‘ananya bhakti’ like this: devotion that never turns anywhere other than the Lord, devotion by which nothing other than Vasudeva is perceived by any of the senses. He gives the three verbs the sense of three stages: ‘jnatum’, to know from scripture, ‘drashtum’, to experience directly, ‘praveshtum’, to attain liberation.
The acharyas read the last stage, ‘praveshtum’, to enter, each in their own vision. For Sridhara Swami it is ‘tadatmya’, becoming one with him. Ramanuja unfolds the three like this: truly knowing him from scripture, truly realising him directly, and truly reaching him. For Sridhara Swami ‘ananya’ means ‘madekanishtha’, devotion established in me alone. It is not the work of this page to judge between these differences. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
To know, to see, to become one. This path is familiar to those who learn music: first knowing the notes, then experiencing them, and at last melting into the song oneself.
In any work this third stage does not come without love. That is what this verse calls ‘ananya bhakti’.
