Context and commentary on verse 13.9
Why two words, ‘asakti’ and ‘anabhishvanga’? Shankara states the difference: ‘sakti’ is ordinary fondness for things, ‘abhishvanga’ its intense form, merging oneself with another. When the other is happy, ‘I am happy’, when sad, ‘I am sad’, when they live, ‘I live’, when they die, ‘I die’. Madhva puts it in one image: ‘sakti’ is affection, and the same, grown overripe, is ‘abhishvanga’.
Ramanuja’s sense is close to the householder: children, wife and home are helpers in one’s duties, and there should be no clinging beyond that relation. ‘The desired and the undesired’ for him are those that arise from our own resolves, and evenness of mind is having no elation or agitation over them. Sridhara Swami, like Shankara, speaks of the absence of the excessive identification ‘their joy and sorrow are mine’.

This verse does not say love less, it says loosen the knot. For parents who feel their children’s exam results as their own victory or defeat, Madhva’s ‘overripe affection’ is a good warning.
Those caring for a patient with a long illness often forget themselves completely. For the care to go on, the carer’s sleep, food and rest matter too. This is not selfishness but a form of evenness of mind.
