Context and commentary on verse 15.13
According to Shankara his strength that has entered the earth is a sovereign power free of desire and attachment, and by it the heavy earth does not fall down or split apart. For this he quotes the Vedic mantra ‘yena dyaur ugra prithivi cha dridha’. ‘Soma’ for him is the moon, holding all saps, and it is an ancient belief that it fills plants with sap and makes them savoury.
Ramanuja calls ‘ojas’ his unobstructed power and ‘soma’ full of the sap of immortality. Sridhara Swami gives grains such as rice as examples of the ‘oshadhi’, plants. Madhva gives ‘gam’ the sense of earth and takes this verse together with the previous one.

For life today
‘Oshadhi’ means plant, and also medicine. Many medicines today come from plants: pain relievers, a treatment for malaria, some cancer drugs. Even so, herbal remedies should not be mixed with other medicines without telling the doctor.
The earth bears us and plants nourish us. Pausing a moment before the plate to remember the farmers and the soil is a simple way of living this verse.
