Context and commentary on verse 15.12
In the sixth verse the sun could not light up his abode, here the sun’s own light is his. Sridhara Swami states the purpose of this section: from here he shows his form of infinite power through his glories. Shankara gives two senses: the light of the sun and the rest is the light of Vishnu, or else it is the light of awareness within them. Since sattva is purer there, he says, that light shows especially there, as a face shows clearly in a mirror.
Ramanuja’s sense is distinctive: because the sun, moon and fire worshipped him, he himself gave them that radiance. Madhva takes verses twelve to fourteen together and calls them an expansion of the knowledge given earlier.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

Looking at the morning sun, lighting a lamp, in the light of the full moon, the memory of this verse turns an ordinary moment into a moment of worship.
Morning sunlight helps keep the body’s clock right and aids sleep at night. But the sun should never be stared at directly, as it can harm the eyes.
