Context and commentary on verse 15.2
The picture of the tree gains more detail. According to Shankara the branches spread, according to action and knowledge, down from humans to plants and up to the world of Brahma the creator. Objects such as sound are the shoots. The roots below are the latent impressions of attraction and aversion, secondary roots like the aerial roots of a banyan. Sridhara Swami calls the branches the jivas: the sinful spread down into wombs such as those of cattle, the virtuous up into divine wombs.
For Ramanuja the roots in the human world are actions themselves: from actions done as a human come births again, below and above. Madhva calls the roots the forms of the Lord, and they are ‘binding to action’ because he too gives fruit according to action. He quotes the Bhallaveya branch: Brahman is its separate root, prakriti is with the root, sattva and the rest are the lower roots, and beings are the branches.

The aerial roots of a banyan come down to the ground and become new roots. Habits are the same: each repetition sends them deeper.
Every notification on the phone is a ‘vishayapravala’, a new shoot. Noticed at the shoot stage, it can be checked before it becomes a root.
