Context and commentary on verse 15.8
Who the ‘lord’ here is, is where they differ. For Shankara, Ramanuja and Sridhara Swami he is the jiva, lord of the body and senses. Ramanuja’s image is fine: as the wind carries scent with fine particles from garlands, sandal and musk, so the jiva carries the senses with the subtle elements. Shankara notes the order of sense: leaving comes first, taking on a new body afterwards.
Madhva’s sense is distinctive: the previous verse’s ‘karshati’, draws, might give the impression that the jiva is independent, and this verse is there to prevent it. The one who takes the senses along when the jiva takes on and leaves a body is Ishvara, the Lord himself. He quotes the Mokshadharma: ‘wherever the creator places it in a womb, again and again, there the jiva dwells, not where it wishes’.

As the wind carries scent, we carry our habits and leanings with us. Which scent we carry is a choice made every day.
Even after the body is left, organs such as the cornea of the eye can give light to another. Eye donation is possible within a few hours after death, and it is good to tell the family of this wish in advance.
