Context and commentary on verse 16.9
Here is the subtle point that conduct is born of belief. Shankara takes ‘nashtatmanah’ as those who have lost their true nature, who have slipped from the means to the world beyond. ‘Alpabuddhi’ is a small understanding that thinks only of sense objects. ‘Ahitah’ means enemies of the world.
Ramanuja unfolds ‘alpabuddhi’ exactly: those not skilled in discernment, who think that in the body, an object of knowing like a pot, no self distinct from the body is found as the knower. ‘Nashtatmanah’ for him are those who do not see a self other than the body. Sridhara Swami names this the view of the Lokayatas, and calls them of impure mind, with understanding only of visible gains.

For life today
‘Jagato kshayaya’, for the ruin of the world. Today this also sounds like a word about the environment: profit-driven conduct that fouls rivers, air and soil spoils the health of generations to come.
Our small choices count too: using less plastic, not burning rubbish, saving water.
