Context and commentary on verse 16.8

The philosophy of the demonic outlook. According to Shankara they think like this: as we are full of falsehood, the world too is false, dharma and adharma are not its foundation, and there is no Lord who rules it with regard to them. The union of man and woman driven by lust is the cause of everything. In the next verse Sridhara Swami identifies this as the view of the Lokayatas, the materialists.

Ramanuja reads ‘asatya’ differently: they do not accept that the world, as the effect of Brahman called ‘Satya’, has Brahman as its self, nor that it is established in Brahman. According to Madhva the truth, foundation and Lord of the world are all Vishnu, and they say the opposite. For this he quotes the Brihadaranyaka’s (2.1.20) ‘satyasya satyam’, the truth of truth.

For life today

The stance that ‘everything is chance, there are no laws’ leads to the conduct of ‘anything goes’. But nature has laws of its own.

One example: if antibiotics are used carelessly, germs become resistant to them. When a law is ignored, its consequence does not fail to come.
