Context and commentary on verse 18.73
Arjuna, who in the first chapter laid down his bow and sank down, rises here: ‘karishye vachanam tava’, I shall do as you say. According to Shankara the delusion destroyed is the one born of ignorance, the cause of all the harm of worldly life, as hard to cross as the ocean. The memory regained is the memory of the truth of the self, through which all the knots of the heart are loosened.
According to Ramanuja ‘moha’ is inverted understanding: taking prakriti, which is not the self, as the self, taking the world, which is the body of the Supreme Person, as separate from him, and the like. ‘Smriti’ is knowing reality as it is. According to Sridhara Swami the memory is the recollection of one’s own nature, ‘this is what I am’, and ‘sthito ‘smi’ means I am ready for battle. For life today
Coming from deep confusion to clarity is a process: listening, questioning, giving it time. Even Arjuna needed a dialogue of eighteen chapters.
In a difficult moment, talking openly with someone we trust helps ‘smriti’, the memory of our own values, to return.
