Sanjaya said: Thus I have heard this wondrous, hair-raising dialogue of Vasudeva and the great-souled Partha.
Context and commentary on verse 18.74
Now the frame of the story returns: the whole Gita is what Sanjaya told Dhritarashtra. According to Sridhara Swami, Sanjaya, having finished telling the dialogue of Krishna and Arjuna, links it to the story that follows. Shankara takes ‘adbhuta’ as exceedingly astonishing and ‘romaharshana’ as making the hair stand on end.
Ramanuja gives the names their family meaning: Vasudeva is the son of Vasudeva, and Partha the son of his father’s sister. ‘Mahatma’ means one of great understanding, who has taken refuge at Krishna’s feet. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
Sanjaya is witness and reporter, yet deeply moved by what he heard. The sensitivity to be thrilled by good words is a quality worth cultivating.
Let us remember that the Gita is a dialogue held on a battlefield: deep wisdom can be found not only in a quiet hermitage but amid the pressures of life too.
