Arjuna said: Krishna, you praise the renunciation of actions, and then you praise the yoga of action as well. Tell me decisively the one of these two that is better.
Context and commentary on verse 5.1
Like the third, the fifth chapter opens with Arjuna’s confusion. In the fourth chapter Krishna said that the action of the knower dissolves away. At the end of the same chapter he also said, ‘Take to yoga, stand up.’ Sridhara Swami explains that to Arjuna the two look like opposed paths that one person cannot follow at the same time.
For Shankara, ‘renunciation’ here means giving up the actions the scriptures enjoin, and ‘yoga’ means performing those very actions. Since one person cannot pursue both together, Arjuna asks for one.
Ramanuja reads the question differently. For him renunciation here means jnana yoga, the path of knowledge. The second chapter had laid down an order, first the yoga of action and then the yoga of knowledge. The third and fourth chapters said that even for one qualified for the path of knowledge, the yoga of action is better. So Arjuna is asking which is the easier path and the quicker to bear fruit.
Madhva treats this chapter as an unfolding of the karma yoga of the third chapter. He also names the concern behind the question: if renunciation were higher, then war would stand somewhat in its way. And he opens the name ‘Krishna’ as the one who draws all things by governing them.

When two good pieces of advice seem to contradict each other, the mind stalls. When one person says ‘drop everything and rest’ and another says ‘stay active’, what the listener needs is not more praise of either but a clear answer about which one is for him.
Arjuna is asking ‘for me’. He does not want a general doctrine but the path that fits his own condition. A good teacher and a good doctor both look first at where the questioner is standing before they answer.
