Context and commentary on verse 5.10
This is one of the Gita’s best known images. The lotus leaf lives in water, yet water rolls off it in drops. Here the way is shown for one who does not yet know the truth, who still feels ‘I am doing this’.
For Shankara ‘Brahman’ here is the Lord. Just as a servant works for his master, one does all actions thinking ‘I do this for him’. Action done without attachment even to the fruit of liberation has only one result left, purity of mind. Sridhara Swami also reads it as offering to the Supreme Lord. By ‘sin’, he adds, is meant the binding action of both merit and demerit.
Ramanuja’s reading is distinctive. For him ‘Brahman’ here is prakriti, and he cites ‘my womb is the great Brahman’ from the fourteenth chapter. One who places actions in prakriti, which exists in the form of the senses, and acts thinking ‘I do nothing at all’, is not tainted by it though he lives amid prakriti.
Madhva adds a small but important note. The Gita repeats the fruit again and again to show that this discipline is not a figure of speech but something actually to be observed.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

Science has studied this property of the lotus leaf. Tiny bumps on the leaf’s surface and a waxy coating make water bead up and roll off instead of spreading, carrying dust away as it goes. It is called the ‘lotus effect’.
The leaf does not push the water away, nor does it flee from water. Only its surface is different. To change the surface of our mind in that way, in the middle of work, is the discipline this verse speaks of.
