- ಪ್ರಭುಃ (प्रभुः, prabhuḥ) = ಪ್ರಭು (ಆತ್ಮ ಅಥವಾ ಈಶ್ವರ) (the lord, the self or the Lord)
- ಲೋಕಸ್ಯ ನ ಕರ್ತೃತ್ವಮ್ (लोकस्य न कर्तृत्वम्, lokasya na kartṛtvam) = ಜನರಿಗೆ ಕರ್ತೃತ್ವವನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (does not create doership for people)

The lord creates neither doership for people, nor their actions, nor the link of action with its fruit. It is nature that does all this.
Context and commentary on verse 5.14
The commentators part ways over who the ‘lord’ here is. Some read him as the embodied one of the last verse, others as the Lord of all. So the word-by-word meaning gives both.
For Shankara the lord is the self. The self does not of itself create doership by saying ‘act’, does not create works such as chariots, pots and palaces, and does not join anyone to their fruit. Who acts, then? ‘Svabhava’, nature: prakriti in the form of ignorance, the divine maya spoken of in the seventh chapter.
For Ramanuja too the lord is the self standing in its natural form, not subject to karma. But for him ‘svabhava’ is the latent impression of prakriti: the ingrained identification with bodies such as god and human that has come from beginningless karma. For Madhva the jiva is ‘lord’ only in relation to the insentient body; in truth it is not an independent doer.
Sridhara Swami reads the lord as God, and faces a hard question. The Kaushitaki scripture says it is the Lord who makes one do good and bad actions. Would he not then be partial, and touched by merit and sin? No, he answers, because he does not create the jiva’s doership. The jiva’s own nature, ignorance, drives it.

For life today
The word ‘svabhava’, nature or temperament, is familiar to us. Much of how we react is shaped by years of habit, the atmosphere of our home and the state of our body. Snapping when hungry, losing patience after too little sleep, are small examples.
Knowing this brings two gains. We stop clutching every reaction of our own as ‘this is who I am’. And we stop judging another person’s anger as the whole of their character.
