But in those whose ignorance has been destroyed by knowledge of the self, that knowledge, like the sun, illumines the Supreme.
Context and commentary on verse 5.16
The image of the cloud in the last verse is answered here by the image of the sun. The sun drives away darkness and shows all things as they are. It creates nothing new.
For Shankara this is straightforward. When ignorance is destroyed by discerning knowledge, that knowledge illumines the supreme truth, as the sun lights up all forms.
Ramanuja draws two points central to his vision from this verse. First, the plural ‘theirs’: those whose ignorance is destroyed are many, so selves are many even in liberation. He says the second chapter’s ‘never was there a time when I was not’ becomes clearer here. Second, like the sun and its light, knowledge is an attribute of the self. In samsara it is contracted; in liberation it expands.
Madhva stresses that knowledge alone destroys ignorance, and adds that the first ‘knowledge’ here is indirect knowledge. For Sridhara Swami, knowledge of the Lord removes the mistaken notion that he is partial and reveals his perfect nature. So from one verse Advaita and Vishishtadvaita draw different positions, and each is recorded here in its own terms.

For life today
When a right understanding arrives, the confusions that came before do not untangle one by one; they make sense all at once. When the right diagnosis of an illness is found and symptoms that seemed separate become a single story, that is a small example of this.
The sun makes no effort to shine. It is enough for the cloud to move. Our work is mostly not to manufacture light but to move aside what blocks it.
