Context and commentary on verse 5.17

The one word ‘That’ comes four times: understanding, self, steadfastness, goal. The repetition shows the seeker’s whole being turning one way. ‘No return’ means not coming back into bondage to a body.

For Shankara ‘That’ is the Supreme Brahman. These are the renunciates who know it as their own self, give up all action and stand in it, delighting in the self alone. Knowledge has washed away the faults, sin and the rest, that cause samsara.

For Ramanuja ‘That’ is the pure nature of the self described in the preceding verses: resolve on seeing that self, the mind on it, devotion to its practice. ‘No return’ for him is the self standing in its own form, in a state from which there is no coming back.

Sridhara Swami reads ‘That’ as the Lord, and says that as the fruit of this worship, knowledge of the self comes by his grace. For Madhva this describes the means that immediately precedes direct knowledge.

For life today

Part of the mind in one place and part in another is our usual state. At work we worry about home, at home about work.

All of us have felt, on a small scale, the strength that comes when understanding, mind, commitment and goal stand in one direction. When we give ourselves wholly to an exam or to a difficult piece of care, other distractions fall quiet of themselves.
