Context and commentary on verse 5.23
The word ‘vega’, surge, is precise here. Desire and anger come not only as feelings but as a wave. Shankara even describes their bodily signs: in the surge of desire, hair standing on end, shining eyes and face; in the surge of anger, trembling limbs, sweat, bitten lips and reddened eyes.
Shankara reads ‘before release from the body’ as ‘until death’: the causes of this surge are endless, so it should not be trusted until the last breath. Madhva sees another point: in a human body it can be withstood, not so in other births, and so it must be in this life.
For Ramanuja the strength to hold back this surge comes from love of experiencing the self. Such a person is fit for that experience, and after leaving the body that joy becomes complete.
Sridhara Swami gives two readings. One, to hold the surge back at the very moment it arises, and not for a moment only but for the whole of life. Two, just as a body from which life has gone is unmoved by the embrace of the weeping or the fire of the pyre, to attain that steadiness while still alive.

Medically, the surge of anger is the body’s stress response. The heart rate rises, blood pressure climbs, breathing quickens. Shankara’s description comes very close to this. The understanding that such surges usually peak and then subside is used in treatments for addiction and for anger management too.
‘Sodhum’, to withstand, means to bear it, not to bottle it up. To recognise that a wave is coming, not act on it, and wait until it falls. Learning to get through those few minutes spares many days of regret.
