(English IAST)
sāṅkhyayogau pṛthagbālāḥ pravadanti na paṇḍitāḥ|
ekamapyāsthitaḥ samyagubhayorvindate phalam || 4 ||
- ಸಾಂಖ್ಯಯೋಗೌ (साङ्ख्ययोगौ, sāṅkhyayogau) = ಸಾಂಖ್ಯ (ಜ್ಞಾನ) ಮತ್ತು ಯೋಗ (ಕರ್ಮಯೋಗ) (sankhya, the path of knowledge, and yoga, the path of action)
- ನ ಪಂಡಿತಾಃ (न पण्डिताः, na paṇḍitāḥ) = ಪಂಡಿತರಲ್ಲ (not the wise)
- ಏಕಮ್ ಅಪಿ ಸಮ್ಯಕ್ ಆಸ್ಥಿತಃ (एकम् अपि सम्यक् आस्थितः, ekam api samyak āsthitaḥ) = ಒಂದನ್ನೇ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಅನುಸರಿಸಿದವನೂ (one who truly follows even one)
- ಉಭಯೋಃ ಫಲಮ್ ವಿಂದತೇ (उभयोः फलम् विन्दते, ubhayoḥ phalam vindate) = ಎರಡರ ಫಲವನ್ನೂ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಾನೆ (gains the fruit of both)
It is the childish, not the wise, who speak of sankhya and yoga as different. One who truly follows even one of them gains the fruit of both.
Context and commentary on verse 5.4
Arjuna asked about renunciation and the yoga of action. In his answer Krishna uses the words ‘sankhya’ and ‘yoga’. The sankhya here is not Kapila’s school but the steadfastness in knowledge taught in the second chapter. ‘Childish’ does not mean young in years but those whose understanding has not yet matured.
Shankara explains this shift of words. Arjuna asked only about giving up action and performing it. The Lord answers by adding knowledge and evenness of mind. So renunciation joined with knowledge is sankhya, and the action that is its means is yoga. The fruit of both is one, liberation.
For Sridhara Swami this is a matter of sequence. The yoga of action purifies the mind, that gives knowledge, and that gives freedom. Even one who takes renunciation arrives there through the strength of the yoga of action done before. So to compare the two as independent paths and ask ‘which is better’ is itself the question of the uninformed.
Ramanuja rejects another misunderstanding: that the yoga of action only produces the yoga of knowledge, and only the yoga of knowledge produces the vision of the self. For him both bring the same fruit directly. For Madhva both are inner means to knowledge, and so there is no conflict between them. The scriptural passages that disparage action, he says, are about action done for desired rewards.

Among us it is nothing new for those who meditate to look down on those who serve, and for those who serve to look down on those who meditate. The Gita settles this quarrel with one word: childish.
Work done deeply and honestly opens doors on the other side too. One person learns standing by a bedside, another sitting before a book. If both learn truly, they arrive at the same understanding.
