Context and commentary on verse 6.20
From verse twenty to the first half of verse twenty-three runs one long sentence. The word ‘where’ returns again and again and ends at last in ‘know that to be yoga’.
Sridhara Swami clarifies the use of the word ‘yoga’ here. In verse two, yoga meant action; here it means absorption, samadhi. The chief yoga is samadhi; action is called yoga because it is the means. He connects Patanjali’s sutra here: ‘yoga is the stilling of the movements of the mind’.
For Shankara ‘by the self’ means by the inner instrument purified by absorption, and ‘the self’ means the supreme consciousness, light itself. For Ramanuja the mind delights there as ‘this alone is surpassing joy’, and, needing nothing else, is content in itself. For Madhva it is seeing the Lord in the body by means of the mind.

For life today
‘Uparamate’ means to come to rest, not to collapse from exhaustion. A mind that has run all day collapses in sleep; in meditation it comes to rest while remaining awake. That difference is the aim of practice.
‘Content in oneself’ may sound selfish. But those content within ask less of others and are able to give more.
