As a lamp in a windless place does not flicker: that is the image given for the controlled mind of the yogi practising yoga on the self.
Context and commentary on verse 6.19
This is one of the loveliest images in the Gita. The word ‘smrta’, remembered, suggests it is not a new image but one handed down among yogis. Shankara calls it an image conceived by those versed in yoga who have watched the movements of the mind.
Ramanuja and Sridhara Swami note two qualities in the image of the lamp: it does not waver, and it keeps shining. When the mind becomes still it does not go out; it shines more clearly. For Ramanuja the image is of the self itself: when all other movements of mind cease, the self stands still, bright with the light of knowledge.
Madhva opens ‘yoga of the self’ as yoga that has the Lord as its object. For Shankara it is absorption in the self.

A flame cannot be held still by force. It is enough to block the wind, and the flame straightens of itself. It is easier to reduce the wind that shakes the mind, the noise, worry and hurry, than to try to hold the mind still directly.
In many homes the lamp in the shrine is protected by closing the window. The mind too needs a little time in the day with the window closed.
