Context and commentary on verse 6.21
Sridhara Swami raises a natural objection here: in absorption there is no contact between senses and objects, so where does joy come from? The answer is in the verse itself: ‘beyond the senses’, it lies beyond sense contact and is grasped only by the intellect that has taken the form of the self.
Shankara opens ‘atyantika’ as endless, and calls it a joy not born of objects. The wise one established there does not slip from the nature of the self.
Ramanuja gives a human reason for ‘does not move’: it is the very surpassing joy of it that keeps him from moving. Not moving is not the fruit of discipline but of attraction. Madhva says it is so because that joy is, in truth, of the Lord’s own nature.

Joy from the senses has a limit: it ends, and it fades with repetition. Verse twenty-two of the fifth chapter said just that. Here is a description of joy at the opposite end.
For most of us that joy is more a possibility than an experience. But the moments of deep peace some people find now and then, in music, before nature, in deep prayer, may point in its direction.
