Context and commentary on verse 6.5
This is among the most famous verses of the Gita. The word ‘atman’, self, comes six times here, and each time its sense shifts a little: the mind that lifts, the ‘I’ that is lifted. The verb ‘uddharet’ carries the picture of pulling up someone who is drowning.
For Shankara this is lifting oneself, sunk in the ocean of samsara, to the state of one who has climbed to yoga. Why the stress on ‘oneself’? Because there is no other friend for liberation. Even worldly relatives, being the ground of the bonds of affection, stand in the way of liberation. Even an outer enemy, in the end, comes from one’s own doing; that is his severe but consistent reasoning.
Ramanuja and Madhva read the first ‘self’ here as the mind. One should lift oneself by a mind not clinging to objects, and not sink by a clinging mind. The mind alone is the friend, the mind alone the enemy. Both quote the well-known line ‘the mind alone is the cause of bondage and freedom for human beings’. For Sridhara Swami, what lifts is the mind joined with discernment.

For life today
This verse is a very strong statement about one’s own effort. Notice the talk that goes on inside us. Some speak to themselves like a friend, some like a harsh enemy. It is common to say to ourselves harsh words we would never say to any friend.
But a caution. ‘Lift yourself up’ should never be said to someone in depression as a reproach. Depression is an illness, not a lack of willpower. In that state, the first step in lifting oneself is often to see a doctor or someone one trusts. Asking for help is also a way of being one’s own friend.
