For him who has conquered himself by himself, the self is a friend. But for one who has not conquered himself, the self behaves with hostility, like an enemy.
Context and commentary on verse 6.6
This answers the question left by the last verse: when is the self one’s friend, and when one’s enemy? The difference is whether it has been conquered. The word ‘anatmanah’ here does not mean one without a self, but one who has not brought himself under control.
Shankara and Sridhara Swami call the self to be conquered the ‘aggregate of body and organs’. One who has mastered it has conquered his senses. Just as an outer enemy does harm, the unconquered self harms itself.
For Ramanuja what must be conquered is the mind. A mind won back from objects is a friend; an unconquered mind acts against one’s highest good. He quotes Parashara in the Vishnu Purana: the mind attached to objects leads to bondage, the mind free of objects to freedom.
Madhva parses it more exactly still: ‘self’ is the mind, ‘of the self’ means of the jiva. When the mind is conquered by the intellect it is a friend. He gives an image too: a servant who does not do a servant’s work is no servant; likewise a mind that is present but does no good is ‘not-self’.

For life today
Many people know the experience of lying awake late at night, running old mistakes through the mind again and again. At such times the mind truly behaves like an enemy. No outer enemy knows our weak spots so precisely.
Conquering the mind is not a one-day war. Simple things like sleep, exercise and proper food also help make it a friend. If such thoughts keep troubling us day after day, sharing them with a doctor is part of the same victory.
