Context and commentary on verse 7.4
Here begins the account of the Lord’s two natures. The first is this nature of eight parts. The list recalls the principles of the Sankhya system, but here they all come under one word, ‘me’, mine.
Shankara reads the list closely. Earth and the rest are not the gross elements but their subtle forms, the tanmatras. ‘Mind’ stands for its cause, the ahankara; ‘intellect’ for the mahat; and ‘ahankara’ for the unmanifest joined with ignorance. It is like calling food mixed with poison simply ‘poison’, he says. This nature is the Lord’s power of maya.
Ramanuja does not go so technical. The five elements with their qualities such as smell, the senses beginning with the mind, the mahat and the ahankara: these make up the nature of the world that stands as the objects, means and places of experience, and it belongs to the Lord. Madhva adds a single note: the mahat is included here within the ahankara.

For life today
There is a curious thing in this list. Mind and intellect stand in the same row as earth, water and air. That is, the thoughts and feelings we take to be ‘I’ are also part of nature.
Present-day medicine does not see the mind as wholly separate from the body either. Sleep, hormones and medicines can all change a person’s mood. Rather than judging depression as a ‘weakness of mind’, this list also hints that it can be seen as a condition that needs treatment like any other illness.
