This is my lower nature. But know, O mighty-armed, my other and higher nature, which is the principle of life, by which this world is sustained.

Context and commentary on verse 7.5

The nature of eight parts is ‘apara’, the lower. Beyond it is another, ‘para’, the higher, and it is ‘jivabhuta’. On the meaning of this word the acharyas clearly part ways.

For Shankara the lower nature is impure and takes the form of the bondage of samsara. The higher nature is pure, the Lord’s own self, the ‘kshetrajna’, the knower of the field. It enters within and holds life in the body, and by it the world is upheld.

For Ramanuja the higher nature is the whole body of conscious selves. It is different in kind from insentient nature, and higher as the one who experiences it. It is what upholds the insentient world, yet it too belongs to the Lord.

Madhva’s meaning is different again. ‘Jivabhuta’ means she who holds the life of the jivas, and that higher nature is Shri, Lakshmi, whose nature is consciousness. He quotes a passage from the Naradiya: the Lord has two natures, the insentient and the sentient; the insentient divides into eight; the sentient one is Shri, the consort of Narayana. Deciding which of the three is right is not the work of this page.

For life today

The same body, the same chemicals within it. Yet doctors see every day the difference between a body with life and a body from which life has gone. Science can measure that difference and explain it, but it cannot by itself say all that it means.

Here the Gita sees the world at two levels: things, and the life that gives them meaning. Seeing a patient as a person and not only as a pile of reports is the same two-level way of seeing.
