O Madhusudana, who is the adhiyajna here in this body, and how is he here? And how are you to be known at the time of departure by those who have mastered themselves?
Context and commentary on verse 8.2
These are the sixth and seventh questions. Two words come together, ‘katham kah’, how and who: who is the adhiyajna, and in what way is he in this body? Ramanuja opens it as ‘who is the adhiyajna, and how is he the adhiyajna?’
The last question is the heart of the chapter: how is the Lord to be known at the time of death? The word ‘niyatatmabhih’, by those who have mastered themselves, already carries a hint within the question: remembrance at that moment rests on a mastery cultivated through life.
Why the adhiyajna is ‘in the body’, Shankara answers at the fourth verse: since sacrifice is carried out through the body, it belongs to the body. For Madhva the qualifier ‘in the body’ serves to distinguish this adhiyajna from Agni and others who are commonly known as lords of the sacrifice.

For life today
‘How will I be at the end?’ is a question that stays unspoken in many minds. Will there be pain, will I be conscious, will those close to me be there? Arjuna asks that question directly.
Palliative care today rests on questions like these: easing pain, easing breathlessness, and making room for fear. Talking about the last days in advance is a sign of preparation.
